Cougar kills young man in California

Oddly enough, a day or two later I get a call from my dad.

"Hey defjon, heads up! The DNR put out a notice about a cougar sighted in Colchester. I know you guys like to hike out there so be careful!"

Thanks, pops! You don't say...

It seems to depend a lot upon where they are moving to, but it hasn't been a problem in FL for the past 4 years or so. DeSantis and the FL Legislature are so hated by the types who have repeatedly voted to destroy many a other states that those types are in the minority of people who move here. That group has hotlines, support groups, aid groups counsellors, etc., working to help persuade outsiders of their persuasion not to move here, and to help the ones who already live her relocate to a state more accommodating to their causes.

Evidence reports otherwise.

How does that refute what I said? All that says to me is that people from Cali and New York are part of the mob moving to Florida. I said that they're not bringing their bad voting habits here in any overwhelming numbers. Over the past three years or so I've met probably 30 or more newcomers from New York, New Jersey, California, and Illinois, etc. Of the ones (big majority) who moved here by choice (instead of for a job) I don't recall a single one of them that didn't volunteer the fact that they were intentionally getting out of the disaster states where they previously lived. They were conservatives amongst a sea of blue. Some of them said they are expecting bad stuff coming down the pipe, and feel that Florida is the best place to "hunker down."

I think we are deviating from the OP to trigger thread lock/closure of "off topic" drift. ;)

We should return back to discussing what to do about cougar/mountain lion encounters. :)

We've had a pretty steady flow from the Northeast for years. A little more flow from California probably isn't going to do us in. You have some young anti gun types coming in but they're balanced by other groups.

One thing that has always helped is retirees. Old people are more likely to lean conservative. Old people who remember when it was legal to buy guns without a background check are usually not voting in dumb gun laws when they get down here.

A lot of our immigration from outside the country is relatively conservative, pro-rights, pro-gun. A lot of these guys who come here from central and south America are from rural areas, and culturally, they're more like rednecks. The ones I've worked with from Cuba and Venezuela are right wing types fleeing communism. Very few of them grew up trusting the government to protect them- they expect to rely on themselves.

We have a fair amount of anti-gun types coming from New York and California, but we have a good balance of others, too.
