I live in North Carolina and my daughter lives in Oklahoma. She has a Ruger LCP I gave to her. I want to send her reloaded 380 ammo. Can I do it legally and if so, what are the ABC's of doing so. I read the thread the fellow posted about shipping 223's. From that I got that you must use a specific placard when shipping via UPS. But if I want to send ammo, do I just put it in a box, put a placard on it, address it, and send UPS ground..........or is there more to it?

I believe you have to tell UPS that it's ammo, then they will put their ORM-D stickers on it. I don't think there's an extra fee or cost, shouldn't be I reckon. But you should go to a UPS terminal, NOT a UPS store! Big difference between them.

And the USPS is out. They'd wet themselves, call the ATF and pray to Obama if you tried to mail ammo.

Haha. Thats funny Rondog. And you're right about not sending them from the stores..learned that one for myself.

I always figured you could just not say anything - but I shouldn't say that because I'm pretty sure THRs mission is not to help folks skirt the law.

U.S. Postal Service (USPS): Shipping of Ammunition is Prohibited

Shipping ammo thru UPS or FedEx is not.

Nope, that's all there is to it. As mentioned you must go to a official UPS Hub not a store and declare it as loaded ammo with the ORM-D letters on the box.

OTTO is on the money, you can not ship it using the Post Office (USPS).

Best and easiest route is to ship it via FedEx. All you need to do is send it ground and print out a small label that says ORM-D. You can even write the letters on the box with a sharpie or something like that. Black ink is acceptable.

ORM-D stands for "Other Regulated Materials- Domestic". The ORM-D exemption is for domestic delivery only.

Is this so much skirting the law or skirting store policy? For the UPS or Fedex store thing.

From the bottom of the linked page above:

A current sticking point is that UPS and FedEx charge a hazmat fee on every package requiring hazmat shipping papers. This fee did not apply to ORM-D shipments because they were an exception from the shipping paper requirement. Under the revised regulations, because a hazmat shipping paper is no longer required for any road or rail shipment of limited quantity materials, there are efforts underway to change the parcel carriers' policies with respect to Limited Quantity shipments in light of the new exceptions.

Interesting.

I'm trying to figure out what that paragraph says ..... in plain ole English.

I'm thinking we might expect to see Hazmat fees for any "limited quantity" package that would require Hazmat papers.

I read it as perhaps hazmat fees being done away with for limited quantity shipments as they may no longer require the paperwork. Being optimistic.

Typically, the "stores" are privately owned franchises, and operate under their own rules. Take something like this to a genuine UPS shipping hub and they'll accept it. A "store" doesn't have to accept everything and they frequently reject things. Plus, they usually charge more on regular shipping than a UPS hub does. No bargain there, only convenience.
