Visited Green Top (near Richmond VA) today and I could not believe the amount of reloading supplies they had in stock. They had just about any powder I could ever want. They had Reloder 17, 19 & 22, Unique, 2400, Bullseye, Tight Group, IMR 4350 and a whole lot more. I picked up 2 lbs of 2400, a lb of Bullseye and a lb of Unique for a friend back in WV that has been hunting for some for almost a year now. What was really nice was the powder was priced below what I paid for it a couple of years ago and I didn't have to pay an additional $50.00 for hazmat/shipping. I ended up paying about $25 per pound after tax. They also had CCI and Win primers in most rifle and pistol magnum, benchrest and standard. I also picked up another box of the Nosler 85 gr. 32's. They have just about any "common" die set you could want in Hornady, Lee, or RCBS (no Redding). This was definitely a pleasant surprise as the last time I was there the reloading section was quite empty. The only thing they didn't have that I was looking for was a Ruger SP101 in 327 Magnum. The fellow behind the gun counter said they just can't keep them in stock.

Fellow working the reloading section told me sales had been very slow compared to last year this time. Think a lot of folks just gave up trying? Forgot to mention they had about 30 or more 8 lb containers. The only powder I was looking for that I didn't see was Varget.

RC, hopefully people won't set on their hands in November or we may be in for a very rough 4 to 8 years.

I make the drive from Roanoke to Green Top a couple of times a year just to stock up.

They always seem to have bullets and powder that no one else has. I hardly ever look in any of the other departments, just head back to the rear right hand corner and fill the basket up!

:D

I can find Varget around here, I can't find Unique:(

I was at a local store that actually had CFE Pistol and 223 on the shelf along with Varget, Universal, Unique, 2400 and a bunch of others. They were swimming in primers too.

Nice to see.

It is a terribly overloaded system. All of the manufacturers are going as fast as they can 24/7. No time for QC.

I think the reason business is slow now is because everyone went into panic buying mode and are all stocked up now. At least that is what I did.

Actually, I was just getting into reloading when the "big scare" had just started. I was lucky enough to snag a 4lb jug of Power Pistol to begin with, not knowing if it was going to be a good powder (it was!). Then I started picking up a pound of different powders as I could find them at the gun shows. I had to get there when the doors opened, as any popular powder would sell out in just an hour or two. BUT, I managed to collect a good variety and have been doing load workups ever since.

All the primers I could ask for at Cabela's available locally.
Win, CCI, Fed, Rem.

Stocked quite a bit last month when they had S&B primers for $18-$22/k

The only powder I use that I still can't find is Accurate #5.

Got TiteGroup, Universal, 2400, Lil Gun & W231

MidSouth Shooters has Accurate #5 in stock for $149....would be about $190 out the door for an 8 lb jug.

I just placed an order for 8 lbs of H-4895 and 2 lbs of Longshot, to add to the 4 lbs I already have.

tdstout---It is all in perspective. You are paying Haz Mat now in the increased prices at your local shop. If buying one pound at a time on line the Haz Mat is a killer. If you buy a larger amount of one type (a couple 8 LB containers) or several 1 LB cans of propellant and/or some primers (Powder Valley will combine in one fee) you can get up to 45 LBS total for one fee. The lower on line prices and the fee spread out over many pounds are still a better deal. BUT around here you have to buy 10 LBS or more to make it worth while to compete with LGS prices or it is a wash.

I still can't find any Unique around here, and I refuse to pay hazmat shipping, so I guess I'll just keep looking.
I was able to get Unique at the Grapevine, TX Bass Pro last weekend. They actually had quite a bit of powder options for a change. The Lewisville, TX Academy Sports just started stocking powder too I noticed and picked up a lb of Tite Group.

Buying 8 lb containers on-line with all the shipping fee's, works out to the same cost as buying it at a gun show for me. Plus, I don't have to drive 60 miles round-trip and burn $4 worth of gas and pay a $9 entrance fee.

I can also match Sportsmans Warehouse on-line as well, even if its just a single 8 lb container.

I removed all the politics. If we can't leave that out, we'll be done here. We don't do politics, nor fantasy, and guessing what might happen in the future and wringing our hands or scaring folks is a waste of time.

If we want to share about how good it is right in our area now compared to what it has been, as the OP did, fine. :)

My local supplier had Varget today. I bought a pound. Left the other 2 on the shelf for the next guy

You only bought your friend 1 pound.... some friend.. :)

He purchased the pound he is working on now (still has 1/2 lb left) when we worked together at Cabelas over 4 years ago so I was afraid if i got him any more than a pound it might go bad before he gets around to using it :D

I'm lucky in that respect. The local gun show is only 20 minutes away, and there is usually one every couple of months. I go to every one, even if I don't need anything. The entrance fee is like the cost of a movie to me, I go there to get my 2A fix and look at all the old guns. Plus, one of the reloading vendors has VERY good prices, most pistol powders $22 or less per pound, including tax. Last show he had EVERY Hodgdon powder in stock, in fact the only thing I noticed that he did not have was AA#2.

Things ARE getting better. :)

The prices at our gun shows run about $28/pound for most powders and the 8 lb jugs are usually around $175 + tax. I just ordered 8 lbs of H-4895 for $200 delivered, so the cost is slightly in favor of the gun show, but I have to travel 60 miles round-trip.

I'm located about 30 miles north of Green Top so I make the trip down there very often. I need to get down there again in the next couple weeks. They usually have a pretty good selection. Much better than anywhere else I've found in the area.

I went to the bigger LGS (as far as stocking reloading supplies) locally yseterday and they did have a good amount of propellant/primers on hand again. Many choices but not five one pounders of everything like they used to have though. No 8 pounders at all either. The prices were about 20% higher than pre panic but all in all this is a lot better than even 3 months ago at the same store. They even had a bunch of different brands of .22 LR bricks for "reasonable" prices with no bag limits.:D Things are bottoming out around here at least for the time being I hope.:scrutiny:

I started handloading in late 2013. I believe this was right at the height of the powder shortage.

I set up my bench and accumulated all the necessary items to load 9mm and 45 ACP. All went well until I go to the powder. The first store I went to had nothing on the shelf. That was when I decided to scan the interwebs and it was made clear to me that powder is the big problem. So on the advice of forums such as this one I made a list of acceptable powders and dug in.

After several weeks of frustration, on a whim I stopped in at a gun shop right in my semi-rural township. Scored a pound of Titegroup, AA#2 and Power pistol. I started with AA#2 and a week later returned to the same store and purchased all the remaining AA#2 (three more pounds) and another pound each of TG and PP. It is interesting to me that I haven't seen AA#2 anywhere since then. Today I have 4 pounds of PP and have never even tried it.

During the winter of 2014 I was able to buy a pound here and a pound there. My shooting really ramped up and between my personal use and family I was going through a pound a month. Still, by the end of 2014 I had probably 50 pounds of pistol powder and used up at least 10.

My motto is "see powder, buy powder".------- What I really need is some additional primers and a lot more bullets.

So I'm probably the reason powder was hard to find and is now becoming easier. I do not need to buy any for the near future.
