Just curious what gun laws are like in other countries? It seems like we are always in such a furry trying to protect our own gun rights that we (or at least I) tend to lose perspective of the world at large.

It seems that as a country progresses, so do it's anti-gun laws. So, for the sake of argument, what are other the gun laws in other countries that are comparable to the US as far as social\cultural evolution.

For instance, is it legal to own a full auto in any civilized country?

Let the knowledge flow ;) ;

Best gun laws - Somalia

In what other country can you find civvies running the streets with AKs and RPGs :neener:

Well, the US for one :p

In Switzerland, it is mandatory. They have a militia system there, every adult male is issued a full-auto SiG 550 and ammunition (although they can't touch the ammunition, they have to buy their own to practice, the issued stuff is just for war), I believe.

I read a story about the civilian contractors working in Iraq.

The general concensus was - they literally do whatever the hell they want.

They have guns - the other people dont. Theres really nothing else to it.

Contractors cut in line at gas stations and there wasnt a damn thing anyone could do, some people approached the convoy to get an AK47 leveled at their face.

In other words: Heinlein was right.

Every gun owner in Switzerland is also registered with the government.

Are you sure there are no gun laws in Somalia? Or is it just the warlord's men you see carrying carrying the guns? Something tells me they probably dont have a real good record on civil rights there.

Best:

We seem to have this discussion every few months and it ironically comes back to the good ol' US of A having the best gun laws among civilized countries. I don't think its fair include lawless places like Somalia.

Switzerland does have the militia deal and is certainly better than most of Europe, but I don't believe that they can legally buy gun "of paper" or carry concealed handguns during their daily business.
