European gun laws

Well I am from Norway, as my nickname states.

Here in Norway I find the gunlaws to be fairly ok. You can own shotguns and rifles from the age of 18 after passing a practical and theoretical course on hunting.

Lucky you, lets hope that you still retain your rights to guns and not loose them to idiotic legislation, because of spree-killers.

I know there is a review of parts of the current laws regarding certain aspects of owning firearms, but I believe and hope the strong traditions we have among hunters and competition shooters here combined with the low crime rate is enough to not let anything like that happen :)

I'm Swedish, as it says under my nickname. The laws here are, well, decent I suppose. Not as bad as the brits, but they could be better. Military style semiautomatic rifles of a post-1942 model can't be used for hunting. The law is quite clever, so even if you manage to fool the local police into giving you a license for say an AR-15 or an M1 rifle, the law says that you still can't use them for hunting. (exceptions can probably be made for the purpose of searching for wounded animals, since they even allow handguns in suitable calibers for that). Licenses for long arms are for life, or until you screw up really bad. Handgun licenses needs to be renewed every five years. There is in theory a limit to the number of guns one can own, which is for long arms for hunting, and six handguns, though exceptions can be made. No limit according to the law about long arms on a license for sport shooting. Black powder guns require a license, unless they are made prior to 1890, and are of cap&ball type, no BP-cartridges. Crossbows require a license, some air guns too.

All Crime Vlad? How about whether your ban had any affect on murders?

From the website you linked: Homicides, Firearm Offenses, and Intimate Violence in Britain

Go to page 7 Vlad. See the homicide rate climb steadily without any hitch from 1990 to 2005? Now when was it you banned handguns?

And you have dubious distinction of the world's greatest serial killer after your ineffectual ban. Makes our nutters look like boy scouts.

1997 and in 1998 and those statistics were from illegal weapons and not illegal weapons.Ignorance and stupidity are rife amongst the British population.Norway, has a much more pleasant air about it and if their shooters can own pistols, then so can we and by the way,If you like so many, said no to handguns, then you can count yourself,as a class A prat.Surely you must understand that it would affect your rights to handguns, surely?

By the way,I wouldn't turn in my collection, for any one, including from the requests of the GCN.One of Labours famous expressions:"Putting People First.:barf: :barf: As for any Labour politiotion, the day that they try pistol shooting,at Bushes Ranch,I will, along with other shooters, demand that they return them, immediately.

What about us shooters, what about our needs and rights? Some of us are working-class citizens, who wouldn't vote for the Tories,to save our lives, because they look their noses down at us.

Oh,you are low class, lowlife scumbags, who are very stupid, moronic, retarded and could harbour potential murderers.

Oh thanks alot, you have really made our day to day.

Vlad,

Enough of the statistics and such. You said that you have no experience with guns. I'd like to help you with that. If you are ever in Houston, Texas, and wish to go shooting, I formally invite you to go shooting with me. I can be reached at [email protected]. Just let me know when you are in the area and we'll set it up. It is always my position that one should have first hand knowledge of what one is arguing about. If you still feel the same about guns after you go shooting, that's just fine. But my guess is you won't. :)

I have a friend who served in the (American) Army. She carried an M-16 and a Beretta 92 every day. Since she left the Army, she hasn't touched a gun and doesn't want to. But she doesn't speak out of ignorance or fear. Her experience makes her feelings about guns somehow more credible. I suspect that some here at THR have noticed your inexperience and used it as a springboard to attack you. Please don't take it personally. There are MANY hippie and elitist types who wish to subjugate the "regular" folk here in the U.S. with their agendas. It is these whom we are wary of - and watch carefully. 90% of them have never even seen a real gun in their life. So go shooting when you get the chance. It's a lot of fun!
