At least for me this was! A few days ago, a buddy calls my cell phone while She Who Must Be Obeyed and I are out having dinner.

"Where are you, man? Are you close to WallyWorld?"

My answer was yes, and his feverish exhortation was to RUN down to Wally's, as they were blowing out Federal .38 Special 110 grain Hydra Shock.

What the heck, we were only a few blocks away, lets saddle up. Upon arrival at the sporting goods section, Holy Moly! 2 dollars a box! How many ya guys got?

I walked out with 26 boxes, at 2 bucks a box, for a grand total of 52 dollah Amelican. Plus a few tins of the 400 count Remington .22 LR, which they deemed worthy of charging only 5 bucks apiece. Why I didn't buy all the .22 is beyond me now, but I will admit to feeling just a tad giddy about the whole thing, so perhaps that explains it.

To top it all off, I just got 500 rounds of UMC .38 Super FMJ from Sportsmans Guide for $94.45, shipped. Not absolutely sure if that is a great deal or not, but from here it sure feels like one.

Gotta say, I am feeling like a fat, happy camper right about now:D

I can hope they are blowing it out here too.... but I understand those things are done on a store by store basis. Oh Darn.

With Wally World, Yogi Berra's immortal utterance is true. "You can sum it up in one word: Ya never know". I've had a friend call me from there to inquire as to how many cases of the Federal .22 Target (std vel) I wanted at a buck a hundred-round sleeve. At the same time, they had two Savage 110's in .30-'06 for a hunnert bucks apiece. For some reason, I just assumed he'd pick both of those up too, after cleaning out the Fed .22's. He didn't, and when I got there later that PM, there were gone, natch.

BluesBear, it was the WallyWorld in Mountain View, California.

I have heard (and read, here mostly) about this sort of closeout/sale bargain at WalMart, but to be honest, it was always after the fact, or 2nd/3rd/4th hand. When we entered sporting goods and I saw the little sign behind the counter (about 3"x3") that read closeout, my heart rate actually went up. Guess it doesn't take much to excite an old fart anymore.

After the looting and plunder, She Who Must Be Obeyed suggested we waltz over to the WallyWorld in Milpitas, but there was no joy in Milpitas that night.

I am reminded of a discount store that used to exist here in California, believe it was called Best (not to be confused with Best Buy). Years ago, they advertised Federal .22 of some flavor for 88 cents per box. Naturally, I ambled over to pick up a brick.

The peculiarity of these stores was that everything was on display, but stock was in a wharehouse. Somehow, this was supposed to give you a better bargain, and prices generally were pretty good. You entered your order on an carbon copy blank, handed it in for a salesclerk to enter on a very slow computer, and the item came down a conveyor belt for pickup. I was waiting patiently for my 10 boxes of Fed .22, when 10 BRICKS came sliding down the belt instead.

It was patently obvious that the salesgirl didn't have a clue, but I could see that she was wondering how something that weighed so much sold for only .88! I had to come clean, and sadly watched the other 9 bricks make their way back into stock. I did the right thing, but I have ALWAYS missed those other 4500 rounds:p

We had Best in Texas too. My grandma was a die hard fan of the Best in Dallas. It closed down some time ago and now the building is home to Half Price Books.

It seems to me that every year never fail the advertise all slugs for a buck or a buck fifty a box. When I show up they I take all the remington golden saber sabots they have (normally 8 bucks a box). They never ring up right as they didn't mean for sabots to be on sale but they didn't specify in the ad so I always get the price.

Wally World's ammo clearances are weird. One store may clearance something, and another still have it at full price. One store will clearance for a while, then the ammo's back to full price.

I picked up 8 or 10 boxes of Winchester Silvertip .380 ACP for half price 3 3 or 4 years ago. When I went back to get more, it was back up to $17/box
