Coyotes here in Mi strickly nocturnal but lots of them. Anybody use the red lense spotlights. How does that work for you. Never tried it but night vision is not in the budget right now.

I beg to differ. What's your budget for a scope? A few times this year, I've seen night vision scopes for a decent price. I don't know the quality of them as no reviews were available.

Coyotes

I live on the high ground along the Wabash river, I see coyotes almost everyday, especially around noon - in singles. pairs or in squads. I hear them in packs at night, close to the house, their eerie "children of the night" voices that make the skin tighten up on your scalp. My BIL and I hunt them aggressively, he also traps. This has been a very good year, they are always well fed and their pelts have been very good this year. My two "go to" coyote rifles are my Remington 788's in 223 and 6mm Remington. At night my BIL runs an AR in 6.8 spc and I run a shotgun with 3" magnum loaded with BB's.

It should have been "almost" strickly nocturnal. Still, they are by far most active at night. I have never heard a deer kill go down or a group howl in the day time with the exception of when they were hunting or killing dogs (35 stitches in mine). That being said, night scope reviews are all over the map so I figured I would try a red spotlight. Those reviews too, are all over but a cheaper place to start.

First question is, do their eyes pick up the red light? I know it's popular for deer because they can't see the red light.

I've found that when 'yotes go nocturnal, sometimes getting out before daylight and calling just as the sun starts coming up brings in those 'yotes that may have had a bad night of hunting and don't want to go back to their den, hungry or empty handed. While not really light out yet, it's still light enough to see to shoot. I also think they are not used to folks calling in pre-dawn hours as most callers(at least around here) tend to hunt after daylight or towards nightfall when the 'yotes are not quite so desperate.

Coyotes - day or night

I have called / hunted coyotes for years, starting with a reed call back in the 70's, then a Jimmy Stewart cassette rig with a remote speaker, then one of the newer wirelss units. At night I work close, with a red lensed spot and a shotgun. During the day, my BIL work in tandem and we see coyotes during the day usually around 50% of the time, when we make a stand. I have killed coyotes at dawn, noon, afternoon and at dusk, here you never know when you are going to see them. I have had them in my yard during the summer when I was mowing.
As I mentioned in my previous post, I live along the river bottom. I have the Wabash river directly to my West and a large creek bottom directly to my East ( why I live on the high ground). There are two big stands of timber to my North and South. As a result we see a LOT of wildlife, especially this time of the year when there is no foliage.
I was sitting out on the front porch around 2300 hrs the other night, sipping some scotch and a coyote walked by, about 20 feet away.

Southern Colorado (north of Raton/Whittington Center)

Tried to buy eggs today but the vendor told me that he's down to ten chickens. Five were eaten by the coyotes. He never had coyote problems before but has shot three of them within the past two weeks.

They're plentiful around here; been thinking about a digital sight, some are down around $500. I don't need high end optics, the last coyote I shot was at 25 yards.

I've successfully used a Q-Beam with a red lens cover.

I once used a red sharpie over a glass lense on a spot light for the same effect.

I see them during the day around my house, they are the clean up crew for things that got lead poisoning tearing up my yard.

Starting to see them regularly here at the swamp. Hear them almost every night when I take the dog out... with a weapon.

We sometimes flush one during a deer drive in PA.Last season we flushed two together but the guys couldn't hit them.
