I am looking at getting a gun in 204. Pretty much settled on a CZ. Don't know whether to get the American or Varmit. The Varmit has a heavy barrel, is that the same as a bull barrel?

Anyone had experience with either?

Currently leaning towards American with walnut or brown laminate stock. Afraid heavy barrel will be to heavy.......

The CZ Varmint barrel is comparatively light for a varmint rifle. The overall weight is about the same as a standard centerfire sporting rifle, with the balance point a little more forward than usual.

My CZ Varmint weighed less than the 700 Rem sporter it replaced.

You really need to handle both before buying.

They both are tack drivers. The Varmint model has a heavy tapered barrel, not a bull barrel. I would recommend that you handle both, and select the one that feels best to you.

Since you want 204, I am assuming a varmint rifle. Get the Varmint. It only weights a little over 7 pounds. The weight is nice and helps after firing a few rounds. The standard can wander after it heats up.

Back on the 204 now, eh?

Good choice. If its a coyote gun, get the sporter. You want the lightest possible rifle you can get since you won't be shooting 100 rounds in a sitting, you will be huffing it over terrain.

Afraid heavy barrel will be to heavy.......

Bingo.

Yep. Christmas is coming around soon. Wife wants to know what I want.:)

Left the 204 idea for awhile and picked up a tikka t3 stainless synthetic 243, but I still need a 204 for a smaller caliber rifle. That will fill my void I currently have.......

definitely american. it has a classic look, and it's very aesthetically pleasing. it's what i have in .221 fireball, i don't regret buying it.

To me it's an individual choice. The American is a good looking rifle, and a pleasure to carry in the field. The Varmint has a lot more stability for off hand shots.

I went with the Varmint with Kevlar stock, for more weight, as well as the faster twist rate in the barrel.

cz 527 I have two of them. Since cz has excellent accuracy, and also I think the varmint has a faster twist, i would go with varmint for the bigger selection of bullets to be used. if twist is the same, then the american is just a babulous rifle, which is why i have two of them.

You won't go wrong with either one, but the Varmit would be a bit better suited due to the barrel.

I have CZ's and I love them. You won't beat the accuracy at twice the price.

Looking at shooring 40 to 45 grain bullets. Whick one will handle them the best?

Neither barrel will really be more accurate than the other. The bull barrel will just let you shoot more rounds before heat becomes an issue. But if its a coyote gun, that will never be an issue.

As for 40-45 grain bullets, you won't be shooting any 45 grain stuff in a factory barrel. Factory 204 barrels are 1 in 12 twist, and that isn't fast enough.

I'm pretty sure it got deleted from the classifieds due to no State in the subject line but it is posted here.

This is only true on the .223 (Kevlar is 1:9 twist, all others are 1:12 twist.) I have one on the way in Kevlar and am looking for a nice one in the Carbine.

ALL .204 Rugers are 1:12 twist regardless whether Kevlar, Walnut or Laminate...Varmint or American. (I have a Varmint in Walnut.)

It really doesn't matter on this particular caliber as folks mainly shoot the little pills out of them and not the heavier bullets of the target loads of the .223 Rem. BTW, if you are shooting varmints you rarely ever need the heavier bullets...and varmints are exactly what the .204 Ruger was designed for.

You are correct. My mistake.

I don't know. I have an older model LUX in 223 with that long, soda straw, barrel, and while it will get hot when shooting prairie dogs, I haven't noticed any diminution in accuracy between hot and cold. I still hit what I shoot at out to about 300 yards, and sometimes further. The issue further out seems to be holdover.

One of these days I'll figure out a better ranging system.

The CZ is a keeper. If I get another anytime soon it will be the 204 but I think for me the build of the particular rifle will be determinative. The last one I had the shop show me had a barrel channel which did not parallel the barrel. I can only figure that the forend warped or something. I did not get that particular one. The wood on some of the rifles is really beautiful, and that might be the clencher for me.
