I had a chance to handle the CZ-p01 yesterday. I just want to get an explaination on the decocker. When the pistol is decocked, the hammer "appears" to not fall completely. The gun shop person said that the hammer was in a "safe" position. However, I did not completely understand his explaination. Can a CZ person fill me in on what im seeing/what is happening? Thanks in advance

When you decock a P-01 it will fall to the 'half-cock' notch. Usually the 'half-cock' notch is used as a safety feature for when the pistol is fully cocked and the hammer falls without pulling the trigger. It will stop at the 'half-cock' notch. CZ's are made to keep the hammer on the 'half-cock'notch while not in use(ie, carrying). This is the recomended possition for carry from CZUB and CZUSA. It is completely safe as there is a firing pin block.

Does that clear it up a little?

Yeah that helps. Does the round have to be fired for it to be "fully" decocked? How can you drop the hammer fully in a safe manner? It just seemed to look like it could snag on something and get pulled back.

No, you can fully cock it by pulling the hammer back. Making it single action.

How can you drop the hammer fully in a safe manner?

The safest way I can think of is to have the hammer fully cocked, place thumb and middle finger on opposited sided of hammer with index finger inbetween hammer and slide, pull trigger(keep it pulled) and slowly lower hammer while slowly pulling you index finger out from in between the hammer and slide. I still wouldn't call this safe. The decocker is there for a reason. The pistol is just as safe on the 'half-cock' notch as fully decocked.

It just seemed to look like it could snag on something and get pulled back.

Thats very very doubtful. I have been carrying a P-01 for a while now and it hasn't happened to me.

Thanks for the info. The CZ was pretty cool pistol. It was smaller than I had expected. What is the recoil like? Say compared to a sig226 or p99?

You can also decock it as you would a DA revolver. It is safe to carry it with the hammer down due to the firing pin block. I carry my 75B like this all the time. One thing, when lowering the hammer, once you get it past the half-cock notch TAKE YOUR FINGER OFF OF THE TRIGGER. This resets the fp block to the "safe" position. Practice this with an unloaded pistol. It's not that hard when you get used to it.

Well, I must admit that I've never fully understood why a decocker gun with a firing pin safety doesn't just drop to fully decocked...

But as the gun is, I can't really see any problems at all using the decock as designed and carrying it on the half cock. I've been carrying a PCR (which is 99% the same gun as the P-01) and even carrying it under a tucked in polo shirt or outside a tucked in polo shirt with a button up shirt over it, I've never had the hammer snag on a single article of clothing. In my opinion, it's more of a theoretical problem than a problem in the real world.

As to recoil... it's 9mm dude. No one should have a problem with recoil in a 28 ounce (plus ammo) pistol. I do own or have owned a gun from most major manufacturers (except H&K) and the PCR/P-01 and CZ75s in general are the most ergonomic pistols I've ever shot... Even more so than the excellent 1911.

I don't know if it was part of CZ's rationale for doing as it did, but there is an upside to NOT fully decocking: the hammer is part-way back, in the CZ line, and having it start the trigger pull from the "half-cock" or safety notch, lightens the trigger pull weight by a pound or so...

My P-01 seems to shoot softer than my CZ75s and my old 75B. Slide
mass might be the reason.. the 01 is a pussy cat with standard loads.

Wouldn't matter if it did. It would just snap back to the half cock position. Plus, there's a firing pin block that is activated by the trigger. SO you'd have to get BOTH the hammer and the trigger snagged on something to over ride the safeties (ie pulling the trigger).

The PO1 is the easiest carrying and shooting auto I have ever had. I wish I'd looked into one a long time ago! The reoil is nil, and with quality ammo, a very good choice for SD. Using Hakans' custom grips, http://www.imageseek.com/hakan/ , and Eric's custom holsters, http://www.imageseek.com/hbeleather/ , the PO1 becomes the best bet on the street today. Price and accuracy are outstanding, and the grip just molds to the hand like a glove.
Gee, do I sound biased? This comes from a guy who carried a Witness 40 for 14 years every single day....and retired it in favor of the PO1!

Another4 P-01 fan here.

I have really enjoyed mine a lot. Particularly with the holster that Eric from HBE made for it! Good shooting;)

For CA gun buyers, Trader's in San Leandro has CZ 75 and CZPO1 advertised at $399. The PO1 has been reduced from $464. I have no affiliation with Trader's.
