DA question

I'm considering a DAO pistol, but I have one main concern: safety.

Allow me to explain. I was always told that you should never carry on a loaded chamber. Well, then what's the point of carrying a pistol? I've also heard that if you carry on a loaded chamber, drop the hammer, to prevent shooting yourself in the foot, groin, etc. Last time I checked, there is no way to decock a DAO pistol--please, correct me if I'm wrong. I know very little about the DAO design, other than that there is no hammer to snag, which makes it seem desireable as a carry piece. So, in a nutshell, here's my question: Is it safe to carry a DAO pistol with one in the chamber?

If you're looking at a DAO, there is no need for a decocker because the hammer will be resting in the decocked position anyway.
To answer your question..."YES!" It is safe to carry a DAO pistol w/ a round chambered...as it is w/ any other well made firearm.

DAO doesn't need to decock since its always decocked, i.e. DAO is always double action: you are cocking and firing with each trigger pull.

There're some "DAO" guns (like Glock, HK's LEM, etc.) that's not really DAO.

For DAO, you can look in revolvers, older DAO semis (basically you should be able to dry fire w/o racking the slide and each pull is the same).

My experience in DA is limited to SA/DA in the Ruger P-series pistols and whatever I can handle in the shop.

The Rugers can be repeatedly dry-fired without racking the slide. An XD, OTOH, fires once, then needs to be racked again. I guess that's what has be confused. From my understanding, the S&W MP's are the same way. Correct me if I'm wrong. What does this indicate?

That's true-if you're packin' a Colt SAA. Modern pistols are safe to carry with one in the pipe.

Carrying a loaded DAO pistol is just carrying a loaded revolver. Both are safe to carry loaded. Also look for a pistol with a firing pin safety, this will prevents AD if you drop the pistol.
