Today me and my dad stoped at a friend's house, I got my old h&a under hammer back. Dad asked if he had anything he's getting ride of. Friend said just a old krag, dad said get it. My dad asked how much after he brought it out, he said $200 my dad said he didn't have that much so he said what ever he had in his pocket.

So dad pulled out his walet, one of them old trucker ones with the chain. Came out to be $141 his friend said it's yours. Over all its a nice little sporter, looks to be a fairly new weaver side mount. Just a no name scope.

Looking it over there a tiny Nick on the crown, that will be no problem to fix. Has a descent bishop stock bore looks just fine. I would have over bid dad but the money in my pocket is for someone else.

Just have to pick up some brass, we got all the other stuff. Hope it shoots would make a nice deer rifle. Shame it's sported I'd rather it was left alone.

I told dad we need to keep a eye out for a nice k4 weaver for it.

Thanks guys, I may have to pop a deer with it this year. I'm not big on 30s but I like me a 30/40. It's dated 1894 if anyone is interested. I pulled the side mount off and was happy there was the proper amount of hole to attach the mount. I've passed on quite a few krags that were Swiss cheese, or should I say Norwegian cheese lol.

I love those lil fixed 4's too. Mines not a Weaver, Sears Ted William's US made scope. I've always loved this thing, its lights out accurate on my 10/22 and I got it for the low cost of free. Somebody donated a box of "junk" at my grams yard sale and I spotted this. I love the very fine crosshairs, they allow for outstanding accuracy for a .22

Nice score for your dad though, your dad must be a happy man for $141.

I lost a nice 30-06 sporter'd mauser to a gunsmith who said it was gonna cost me about $100 to drill and tap for a scope. I paid $100 for the rifle and it was in excellent condition. He called me about 8 months later with a $460 bill. We had a disagreement about the price and I had to abandon the rifle. It was a great deal, had a real nice stock too. It was a steal but I lost it.....

Carbide is your friend with these old actions, I've heard more story's then I can remember about gunsmiths messing up.

Nice looking sporterized Krag. There was a time in the fifties and early sixties when sporterizing military surplus rifles, mostly for economic reasons, was all the rage. As time when on, it became more expensive to buy and modify military rifles than it was to purchase a new bolt-action rifle and the practice fell out of favor.
I think some of these deer club's should have a old sporter day, they can really be great rifles if done right. I never liked the idea of cutting up a perfectly good rifle but we had a lot and built many when I was a kid. If it's already cut mine as well make it nice.

Not trying to be your 'dad' but in NY? Are private sales w/o a BGC legal in NY? Between non family members? I'd be careful about posting this stuff on a public place..if I'm all wet, oh well.
The SAFE Act also tightened existing regulations by implementing universal background checks for buying, transferring and selling firearms. It extended the NICS background check to private sales as well unless the sale or transfer is between immediate family members.

Since March 15, 2013, a background check of a buyer or transferee of a firearm must be performed by a federal firearms licensee (“FFL”) before a firearm is sold or transferred by a private individual.

OUCH! Hopefully, since then you have always gotten all such agreements in writing. ;)
