I have officially converted an anti-gunny to a gun lover! A little background:

My girlfriend has always had an inept fear of guns due to a childhood friend of her family taking his own life with an AD from daddy's shotgun. I have been trying for the past three years to get her to go to the range with me and go shoot but was never able to get her to crack her fear. Then she finally agreed on going but we could never get our schedule's and the range's to co-exist (I live in the suburbs with no land to go shoot at nearby). So today we finally get the planets to line up and we go to the range.

Well she was cool about going with me but was still saying she might not shoot, she's just going to watch me. Then she mustered up the courage after I rented her a Ruger .22 pistol. Once I quickly ran through the 4 rules and showed her how to handle the pistol and its controls, I loaded it up. Well, when it came time to shoot, she again backed down with fear (I could see her fear in her eyes and demeanor). So I just took it easy and told her I would shoot it first. So I took a magzine worth of shots and then coerced her into taking her turn. With hesitance, she took the gun from me and proceeded to take 7 straight head shots at the target followed by three COM hits:D She ran through the 50 rounds of .22 in maybe 10-15 minutes in that Ruger pistol.

Then I asked her if she wanted to shoot my 702 Plinkster. She gave me the look of fear again because its a 'big' gun. So I did the same thing and she watched me shoot off the 10-round magazine and then overcame her fear again and loaded the magazine with two round, slipped it in the receiver and began to take her position. She was trembling thinking this was going to hurt (Its a .22 rifle, and yes I tried explaining to her how it won't recoil even as hard as the pistol, but she didn't get at first) but had the courage to pull that trigger and proceeded to throw down a five rounds worth of head shots! Including two overlapping shots :D

Now the only thing I am worried about is when she asks me to buy a gun for her. It's gonna be a challenge to find a gun for a girl who is 5'1" and maybe 120 lbs with tiny hands! Oh yeah, and she's already asking me when can we go again to the range because we forgot to leave with her range safety card.

Converting anti's is the best. I converted my then g/f and am now busy converting some of her family. Taking someone new to the range is very rewarding. Keep up the good work!

Girlfriends are the easiest to convert. Nonetheless, excellent job and keep up the good work!

Look at a Walther p22 to start off with. No one's hands are too small for that pistol.

My wife is about the size of your girlfriend, so far she likes the Kahr P9, S&W J-Frame with the ladysmith grips, and the Walther P22. Anything bigger than that is too big for her hands.

for tiny hands I would say a Walther P22 (small caliber), it looks nice, affordable, etc. I always see the P22 more like a gurly gun than a man gun.

Playing along is not "conversion." Women are absolutely NOT easy to convert (girlfriend or otherwise). It's not a conversion until the convert goes and buys their own firearm. Joining GOA would count too.

I agree on the playing along part and I won't purchase any firearm solely for her, it'll be something that I take along with me if it doesn't work out between us. When she buys her own, that would be the day the sun rises, lol.

Well, from my personal experience, they are. My previous girlfriend (still a good friend) wasn't exactly an anti but she didn't really like guns. Well, after discussing the issue and going shooting, she ended up buying her own AR-15 about a month ago. It's funny because she told me that if we ever got married, she didn't want any of those "scary looking" guns in the home. Now she has her own. ;)

The reason that they're generally easier to convert is because, if you find a good one, they'll sit around and listen to you. They value your judgment and thoughts because they care about you personally, or at least they should care.

It's not the failure to understand that prevents people from understanding reasons for gun ownership. It's the fact that they don't want to listen long enough for you to explain your reasoning to them.

lol, it's a bit more complicated than that. I still love her dearly and I want what is best for her. Surely she'll be a lifelong friend and shooting buddy, but I just do not foresee marriage in the future.

Sorry about the sidetrack. Back on topic. So what about converting the antis, eh?

Good job.

That was brave of her to make the choice to face a fear that, unlike with many antis, was justified to some extent.

She must trust you very much to let you lead her through that. Be worthy of that trust. :)

The gun I plan to get for my DS#2, who is 8, when he is ready to be trusted to shoot a handgun is a Ruger Bearcat. I have to believe that the cowboy revolvers are the friendliest-seeming, "good-guy" looking guns around. And the single-action aspect makes it good not just for kids but also for people who fear that guns will go off all on their own since it adds that extra step of intention to fire.

The 9 or 10yo kid shooting in the IPSC-Lite match at our club this past Saturday uses a Walther .22 so that must be a good one for tiny hands too -- he's a skinny, little thing.

Love it. The best part, for me, isn't just that an "anti" was "converted", but that someone faced their fears (which often have rational or semi-rational roots, as in this instance) and overcame them. That's a thumbs up in my book, guns or otherwise.

Exactly what I was thinking. I myself used to own one, it was a fun plinker to loan to girls/friends when we went shooting, although it was too small for my hands.

It does feel great! My GF has fallen in love with guns too. She loves the Walther p22 a lot and I highly recommend it. I know that there will be others who will say that they have had trouble with theirs (often because they have an older model one or don't ever clean theirs...) but that little gun has been a great training tool and plinking gun for fun and I think is a large part of why my GF has fallen in love with shooting. The pistol grip is very ergonomically friendly and the recoil is just right for a beginner.
Oh, and Good job man!

My wife doesn't care if me and the grandson shoot, but converting her ain't gonna happen. She had to clean up the mess after a friends suicide, and she won't have anything to do with 'em.

With my .22 rifle I can consistently put in very small groups, but if she starts to shoot better then me, then great because it means she has been practicing and getting her heart into it! So if she surpassed my markmanship skills I would have to throw a party ;)
