About 8 months ago i placed an order with s guide for items, got them as usual,no problem. about 2 months later a charge for a few hunded dollars from Minnesota from some unknown source. i called the credit card co & they took care of it. Im on the east coast, ive never been to or ordered anything from minnesota except s guide.I know someone from there stole the card number & used it on something.Last week i recieved an order with ammo. it was shrinkwrapped. today i unwrapped it to put it in an ammo can. one of the boxes of tula 7.62 ammo only had about 7 of the 20 rounds that were supposed to be in there. Now if someone stole 13 rounds out of 20 & did it with many orders ,think of all the free ammo this worm is getting. Anyone who orders from them should check their order carefully,& watch your credit card, too. This is twice in less than a year. going to call & complain later...

Report the theft to the company and the Minnesota attorney general office or police for the city the company is in. This must be stopped. Can happen anywhere. Sorry to hear it.

It could also be from whoever they bought it from. We recently had a major ID theft, and I have no idea how they had every piece of ID necessary to actually go into a bank and pose as my wife an I. It's getting more and more common, from speaking with the police and FBI, along with several investigators with the bank. Just be as careful as you can, I don't ever even give the doctor my SS#, and they still got us.Also Lifelock is a good product to look into, I now have their Ultimate package.

Its a hassle when on-line companies "leak" your credit card info. But there is no loss, just inconvenience, the merchant that accepted the fraudulent charge usually ends up taking the hit. One of the best defenses is by making it difficult to order with different shipping and billing addresses. This can be legit, but its absolutely essential for fraud, some extra verification the once every couple of years I actually need to do this would cut down on a lot of fraud.

I have one credit card I use for nothing but on-line purchases and they detect fraud on it about every 14-16 months on average and send me a new card and number.

The Obamacare site is potentially much more devastating since its got your SS number.

Sad but true :(

Sportmans Guide used to be an outstanding company. I used to live in Minnesota and I ordered from them all the time. I also used to go to their retail room regularly. BUT Gary Olen sold out years ago to a French company and since then the company has gone severely down hill. Years ago a forum member posted that with only your zip code you could pull up anybody's order and see what they ordered including your ADDRESS. When we sent emails to the company to express concern it could open customers up to theft, (for example if someone could see you address and the fact you ordered 500 rounds of 7.62x39 a thief could probably assume you had ammo and an SKS/AK47 to steal). The company responded they basically didn't care and weren't going to change their policy. Needless to say we all pretty much vowed to never do business with them again. And I won't, ever.

(BTW I see they eventually did change the "order status" search engine on their website to include the order number. Previously all you needed was a last name and zip code so it was really easy to fish for people's orders. It gave out all the details of the order including the address of the person who ordered it.)

Man I wish I could find that thread, I don't even what forum it was posted on. I would love to share the response they sent the OP with you. Oh, well do a search on google for "sportsmans guide complaints" that will tell you plenty. To sum up the response, don't order from them. They are crap.

Since he sold that company, i noticed the prices on surplus military items went up to a price thats not a bargain anymore. now used sweaters are 25-35.00, theres so many items that are 2 for 17.99 i dont know who is pricing this stuff, but its too bad, they used to be great.i dont think im going to be ordering from them anymore, either, based on this above info as well. Just another company changing hands & going down the drain....

I stopped doing business with them more than 10 years ago. Everytime I made an order they were out and had no idea when they would get more so no backorder. I hate bait and switch tactics some sellers use.

Sorry to hear you're having problems with Sportsman Guide OP. I've only been buying from them since 2010. Mainly just purchase ammo when it's on sale. My experiences have all been good. I've had a few items back ordered but they have always been shipped at the original price. You can almost always find a coupon code for free shipping. Not to many places will ship a case of 7.62x54r from Minnesota to Arizona for free.

I buy a lot less from them than I used to, and agree the deals are fewer and further between since Gary Olen sold the company.

But like with Cheaper Than Dirt or anywhere else, if they have the best price + S&H on what I want when I want it, that's where I buy. With their $10 coupons and basically $19.95 flat-rate shipping they can be hard to beat for a case of ammo (when they have it, they have been very good at honoring the original back order price even over a year later!). They have also been very good at returns on stuff that proved not up to snuff.

I don't think this is any large scale credit card theft, as I just received a back-order from them today, and haven't got any fraud alerts from my credit card company (shipping to another address or $1 charges are a sure trigger with Capital One).

As to the possible ammo theft, every order comes with a "packed by" on the shipping invoice so I suspect they can track it down quickly if you give them all the info.

First of all, do you have any REAL proof the cc thief got your card # from Sportsman's Guide? Most all card # theft has nothing to do with doing purchases with companies who sell online. This is a very common misconception. Frankly I also don't think the missing ammo is related at all - probably shorted by the factory. For sure they owe you those rounds.

I no longer do business with SG, because frankly their prices are not even close to good anymore. Certainly not worth joining for a fee. Back in the day, I used to buy plenty of ammo and clothes from them. I had two CS encounters with them and both were very positive in the end. Once they sent me some .300Blackout ammo when I ordered 6.8SPCII - they actually had a part # error. They quickly replaced the ammo. The other time, I ordered 10 different brand boxes of .380 to try through a gun and nothing showed up. I called SG to find out the tracking and such - long story short, - well it was delivered and left on my porch, and some clown stole it. Guess what? Replaced it, 100%, no charge.

I order from SG once or twice a year and I've never had any major problems. My last order was for a military-issue Sage Polartec fleece, which is just like the older black fleece (drawstring hem, pit-zips, zippered pockets) but I can still wear it on drill weekends. Anyway, I ordered a large and I got an extra large. It still fits fine so it was not a big problem.

The only other possible foul from SG is that my negative reviews are never posted. For example, I ordered an Austrian military rucksack that was just a lousy design, it makes the ALICE pack look like the space shuttle by comparison. It was not SG's fault that it was a crappy pack, but my review was never posted.

Other than that I have ordered a bunch of products I love, such as an Austrian military Gore-Tex jacket, German military cold weather mittens and liners ($18 for six pairs!), sweaters, t-shirts, all kinds of stuff.

I ordered two Italian GI wool sweaters from SG for low $, and those things are the bomb. VERY warm, fit great, etc. BUT they stunk of mothballs and it was nasty. I had them dry cleaned and it only helped marginally. The dry cleaning lady says "You hang sweater in sunshine. Two. Maybe three day. Stink gone." I learned something nice from her. Works like a champ. I only wear those sweaters under 30°F or so, if warmer I'm sweating like a maniac.

Hmmm...

To mitigate such activities, I have what I call my "interned credit card". It's a credit card with a deliberately truncated limit on it, so that even if it's maxed out and the credit card company should choose NOT to take care of a disputed charge, I can still easily pay it in full and get a new credit card. It's ALWAYS paid in full immediately after I use it, so it never carries a balance for more than a few short days. This way the full credit limit is always available for me to use on line.

I'd recommend that you (and anyone else) do the same. $500, $1000, whatever meets your needs and would still be able to pay in full in a very short period of time.

As for your problems with the company...you really need to call them and lodge a complaint with them. Both quality and security are huge company concerns. If they're pushing out a product that isn't right, they need to know this to have their suppliers go fix themselves. If they have a problem with people stealing either product or personal information from customers, then they also need to know this, as well.

A singular complaint here and there are not much concern for companies. However TRENDS are...and if several customers call in on these things, then they know they've got something to fix.

So please do make that call. Perhaps you'll get things squared away in short order with the product you ordered. Problems cause customers to go away...but companies also know that how well they FIX those problems can also make a customer be a returning customer.

There was a recent video on Youtube of some Congressional hearing about the website. One Congessman pointed out that, buried deep in the code was a line that stated that users of the site had "no expectation of privacy". This is despite the fact that the site claims to be "HIPPA compliant".

Yeah, right.

FYI - go to Wally World...and buy a "Blue Bird" card. ONLY use it for internet transactions and daily in town (such as eating out, when the server takes your card away from your table).

Is an American Express, without any fees, but with ALL of the AE benefits.

I submitted a negative review once and I doubt they posted it (but in truth I never looked), but it did trigger them sending me an Email with a prepaid return shipping label for a refund. Hard to beat that!

The same thing happened to me a year ago. Their tracking said it was on my front porch but it wasn't. I'm thinking a dishonest delivery driver stole it. However, SG reshipped the entire 500 round order without delay. They aren't what they used to be but they still try with their CS.
