i have a sub compact 40 and a 45 xd's to sub compact is more accurate than my 45 but the recoil is sharper too but on the police qualification that i have to do every year the 40 produce a score of 498 out of 500 and the 45 did a 487 out of 500 i prefer the 45 even though the 40 is a little more accurate remember a 45 230 grain makes a bigger gile than a 180 grain 40 cal

.40 or .45

Well I am no expert on the .40 or .45 but I thought I would add my $.02. I recently purchased a XD45 compact, this is my first .45. I would say my XD45 is more pleasant to shoot than my Mill Pro 9mm. I was very surprised at how comfortable it is to shoot, I have shot 185 gr. Gold Dots and 230 gr. Blazer Brass through it. I have never shot the XD .40 but have witnessed others struggle with the recoil, no doubt standing behind someone shooting one and it is a much higher pressure round. I would suggest if she really wants a .40 go with something in steel and some weight behind it it makes a huge difference, or at worse the 5" model. I have small hands and the .40 is more comfortable that the .45 but I most definitely can't complain when shooting it, it feels great. The .45 has an extra round and if you desire the compact makes a great carry weapon. I hope this helps.
Good Luck and Be Safe!

This isn't my wife's gun, I just want her to be able to shoot it. She's going to be taking over my Bersa for awhile. I'm also going to get a 9mm barrel to use at the range with her.

The versatility of the conversion barrels is ultimately what won me over to the .40 over the .45. I picked it up about an hour ago and really look forward to getting to the range with it. I still plan to get an XD-45 Compact at some point, but this gun takes care of both inexpensive 9mm practice and .40 S&W stopping power for carry.

You may have some extraction issue with the 9mm barrel. With using the 357sig barrel you should have no issues.

I have read that using the 9mm barrel in the XD40 the extractor might have issues grabbing the 9mm case due to it being smaller than the 40/357sig brass.

I'm not sure what exact model your going for... but in compact to subcompact i'd say take the .40. The .40 cal does better in shorter barrels than the .45 does.

XD

I have the XD 40 and the XD 45C. I say buy the XD 45 now, and when the wife complains that it is not comfortable to shoot, buy her the XD 40. Now you will have both guns and she will have the warm fuzzy that you did it for her!:)
