I own an XD 45 ACP and love the pistol, but I'm torn between getting a MP .40 or an XD 40 or XD 9. Anyone have any opinions on this one? I've check the S&W forum and most reviews of the MP 40 are good, but the gun is so new I'm not sure if it is worth getting...yet.

I have an XD-9, and today I picked up a M&P .40. The XD-9 is really nice to shoot. It is quite accurate out of the box. I have not shot the M&P .40, but if it shoots the way it feels, I will be very very happy. I was originally going to purchase a Glock or an XD-40 today, but I could not put the M&P .40 down. :D

I'm looking for either a 9mm or .40. I don't have a pistol in either caliber. I have the XD45 and love it! I just wondering if the XD-9 or XD-40 shoot as good as the 45. I too liked the feel of the M&P 40 and that is still in the mix.

I shoot my XD9 tactical the best of any plastic pistol yet. Not a fair comparrison for many that are 4" barrel (like my Taurus 24/7 PRO), but for me it blows away the Glock 17 even though mine has the 3.5 lb connector in.

I tend to buy guns in 9mm first for cheap shooting and if I really like them I get the .45 version. I personally don't have much use for .40 S&W except for sub-compact CCW like my Kahr PM40. Ammo for .45 and .40 costs too close to the same so if I don't shoot .45 I bring out a 9mm. My bias is for 1911. I do have a CZ75 in .40 S&W because after I got the Kahr I figured I should have a full sized .40 S&W. Novelty wore off soon because of ammo costs, but it did turn me on to CZs so I ran out and bought a CZ75 in 9mm which has pretty much ended up my wife's center fire range gun.

For me reloaded .45 costs about the same as cheap 9mm FMJ, problem is finding time to reload lately, so I've been shooting lots more 9mm the past couple of years.

Really I think it boils down to do you want the same gun in a caliber that'll be cheaper to shoot (assuming you don't reload) or do you want to try something different. I'd probably get a S&W MP if the price is reasonable when they come out it 9mm, I do like the looks, for a plastic gun :)

I like the ergos on the M&P, I was able to put 500 round down the range. Trigger is better than Glocks. I'm really thinking about buying one for myself. Plus the extra grip panels are a real plus for ergonomics.

I just picked up a XD9. Didn't look at the rest of them, I just liked this one. I've got a couple of other 9mm's and like it. The ammo is inexpensive so I get to shoot it a lot, and the logistics of buying ammo is simplified.

One of these days, I'll get a 45 something or other.

I held an MP at a gun show and wouldn't take it if you gave it to me for free. The worst feeling gun I've ever held. I'll take the XD in either caliber.

The XD-9 is accurate for me and the ammo I buy (lancerammo) is not really expensive.

SACOLT, how is the recoil on the M&P? Did you find it to be a straight shooter out of the box?

i don't like the xd's mag cap - but i do like most things about the gun. probably doesn't need to recoil as hard as it does, but recoil never really bothered me.

the smith is a nice feeling gun, but i haven't shot it. i like their mag caps.

for me, it boils down to the magazines: sacrifice capacity, or (short term, at least) availability?

Did you try one of the other backstraps? That's one of its "features" in an attempt to fit more hands.

I have an XD-40 with a DGR and 22# spring and its a sweet shooter

it was great before the new spring and g rod and even better after

The recoil is about the same as a Glock 22. Accuracy for me, was a little better than the Glock, that could be that the M&P fit my hand better.

I don't own either, have shot several XD's, fondled the M&P a bit. If I were going to buy one of them, it would be the M&P. S&W did a very good job on the ergonomics and it is a sharp looking pistol. As long as it is built to the standards of the 3rd gen auto's, it should be a fine handgun. I will buy one if they offer it in .45 or 10mm, but I don't like .40 and I have too many 9mm's as it is.

I can't comment about the M&P because I have yet to handle/shoot one. I can, however, say that I really like my XD-9 Sub-Compact and my XD-40 Service Model. They are both great shooters for me... My DGR and 22# spring for the XD-40 should be here today, and I've heard that that combo makes the XD-40 even better.

I know it isn't always a concern, but what are the differences in price between the guns that you mentioned? Aftermarket accessory support? Those are always things that I consider when I buy a gun.

Taurus44, Good point. There are more accessories for the XD series than the M&P. I believe that is mainly due it being so new and just released. Prices are all about the same ranging from ~$485-530. So you like the Sub 9?

get 'em all - build a collection. no one gun is ever truly enough, and asking a bunch of folks on the net about what gun you should buy is sorta like buying a car based solely on someone else's test drive.

I own a XD-45ACP and two XD-9's. I would go with the XD-9. The thing I don't like about the M&P is the magazine disconnect safety.

Sorry, but the SW M&P give me Sigma flashbacks. Besides, that thing is not cheap. S&W makes great revolvers, but their autos leave alot to be desired to me, at least.

That said, I love my XD-40 Service Model. 2 years of serious shooting and not one malfunction and no rust. Gotta love that.
