if you like the M&P but dont want to shell the $$$ checkout the Steyr MA1. short crisp 5 lbs trigger.

I own S&W Sigma 40VE though trigger is unusuall its proven quite reliable despite idiot internet megaphoners and single action sissies that could never handle anything other than single action trigger. few seldom seem to of had experience with sigma.

S&W is on the upswing. service is tops.

www.smith-wessonforum.com number of M&P post

M&P is made in the good old USA
Steyr is made in Austria
XD made in Croatia.

Taurus44, Good point. There are more accessories for the XD series than the M&P. I believe that is mainly due it being so new and just released. Prices are all about the same ranging from ~$485-530. So you like the Sub 9?
I absolutely LOVE my XD-9 SC! It's my favorite gun and I don't really see myself ever giving it up. If you get one, definitely try the Pearce magazine extensions, though. They make all the difference in the world (The XD Gear extended mags are only so-so IMNSHO).

I bought the XD-40 as a toy to upgrade/tinker with, and I'm really liking it now too. I can see an XD-45ACP Tactical model in my (very near) future too... Damned XDs have sucked me in!

I was leaning toward the XD-9 Subcompact then...I got the March issue of Amer. Rifleman and what I see on the cover MP 40. The review was good with a hint that a 45 may be coming :) I think I'll fondle the 40 some more and maybe wait for the 45 since I love putting big holes in paper :D Thanks a lot for all your input. I'll let you know what I get.

Not to make things harder on you, but I got my XD-9 SC off of a buddy who "traded-up" to a Sig P239 in .40S&W. That is also a really nice gun, but I'm cheap so I'll stick to my XDs. ;)

Too funny LOL...I started looking at the P239 first. One of RSO's has one and likes his a lot. I too wanted something a little cheaper. Sigs are a bit pricey even the used one hold their value pretty well.

Not bad grouping for the first time out. I knew you would like it. about time that a American Gun Company put out a good product like this.

your XD is not made in america its made in croatia

the USA on the side of the XD stands for "Ultra Safety Assurance" which is the trigger system

its manufactured by IM Metals in Croatia. Springfield imports and distributes it.
it was originally imported as the HS2000 and sold for $100 less interest and importation faded then SA picked it up put a X in the name and bumped the price $100.

Darn! I was kind of excited that it was made in the USA. Well, at least it gives some people in that crappy area of the world some work. Just don't tell me the M&P is made there too!!

Well the importer is US and located ~ 30 miles from my home town. I feel good about supporting the local economy :) However, why are these gun manufactures still operating in anti-gun states?

"that crappy area of the world" manufactures some pretty good guns...don't kid yourself.

Ever seen the Zastava made autos? How about the CZ pistols? Makarovs? The Bulgarian made Arcus 9mm that are very much like Hi-Powers? Ever sshot a Romanian SKS or AK clone? A Czech VZ-24 Mauser? Yugoslavian M-48 Mauser? Pretty nice stuff, if you ask me.

The former Iron Curtain countries make some damn good rifles and pistols, especially the Czechs. The great thing is that their stuff is alot less than the guns made by the Germans, Austrians, Italians and the Spanish, but the quality is very close. I'd take my XD over any Beretta pistol - its that good!

I have several guns from that region and would buy several more...they're great guns and people are just now discovering that fact.

Made the purchase...

I made the purchase this evening. I chose the MP40 ;) I figured I have an XD and if wife only lets me get one more gun before she buys hers I'd try the MP. I like the way it feels in my hand. I will post my range results tomorrow and yes, my wife is coming with me. :D

distra,:D you will love it. I'm now trying to convince my wife that I need one. hope to have it this weekend.

Congrats Distra! I went to my local gunshop today and he told me that the 15-round mags for the M&P.40 are on backorder. I guess I can live with just 2 for now. Can't wait to see the range pics. Have fun and be safe!

Yes...XD over Beretta.

I used to own a 92F Beretta and if somebody offered to trade me a 92F for my Xd today, I'd most definately say no.

Have you seen the torture test done on a box-stock XD-9 in Handguns Magazine? It was done sometime last year. That test ought to put to bed any concearns of how durable the XD pistols really are. I doubt more that 5% of the people that buy and shoot an XD will ever put theirs through what that guy did..eye-opening to say the least.

Do a Google search for the XD torture test and see for yourself.

All is true except that "one-of-a-kind" Bruniral finish. Since XD became more and more popular, hard chrome shops like Tripp Research and many others, got a lot more business than before. That's why XD forum got so many posts of people asking about refinishing question, showing their refinished XD pics, comparing hard chrome vs. NP3 prices, etc. Even Beretta's Bruniton finish doesn't generate this much concern over the rust prevension issue...

(XD does sell stainless slide version, the Two Tone XD. But the trigger, slide release, take down lever, grip safety, and many little pins are not stainless on the Two Tone models...)

Range report MP40

It was a little rainy this afternoon in the Nutmeg state, but that has never kept me from the range before. I took my wife with me since I have three new guns that she has yet to shoot. Her only stipulation for having them in the house is that she needs to know how to shoot them just in case... We took the MP40, XD-45, and 1911Sc to the range and setup 25ft targets. Pictured below are the results of me (the first 2) and my wife (3rd) shooting the MP40. Last picture is my wife's first 2 mags of the XD-45 :D We were both impressed with the MP40. We put 100rds of 165gr WWB and 50rds 185gr WWB. From the pix you can see it shot a little low in my hands, not so much for my wife. I did not bench rest it, that will come this weekend :D I really liked the trigger, it was crisp and not as much take-up as my XD. I used the medium palm swell. My wife tried both medium and small. She really could not tell the difference. Very nice shooting piece. I will have to get used to a few things, mainly the slide stop. I'm used to my 1911 with an extended slide release which I can actuate with one hand only. I was able to release the slide, but with my supporting hand. When I use it in tactical matches, I'll use the sling method. I only had one issue (wife none) with the slide stop. I think it was after the 2nd round fired that slide stayed open. I think I might have fat fingered it by having my supporting thumb close to the slide stop. It did not happen again and didn't happen to my wife at all. Jury is still out on that one. Bottom line, I think this is great pistol and once I get a holster, saturday tactical matches :D Thanks for all the input and Treebeard, I like it almost as much as my XD-45 ;) I'm still a big fan of 1911's, but these polymer guns are catching up. :D

Very glad you like it!! I would like to know if you and your wife noticed any difference between the 165 and 185 grain WWB. I just ordered some test ammo from midwayusa.com in various loads (160 grain and 180 grain) to see if that makes any difference in accuracy. Also, I see your hits got better on your second target. When I was shooting it took me a few mags until I got comfortable. Your wife did pretty good on that 4th target for sure with that XD45!! I did not experience any problems with the slide staying open, but I read on another forum where it occasionally happens when the gun is new? I will be going out again this weekend to put a few hundred rounds through her. :D :D

You know.. when I see the S&W M&P.. I say.. "why not the SW99?"..

then I say..

why not the P99?

Yep, she is scary sometimes. She has not shot very much maybe half-dozen times. She likes the XD, but she thinks it might be too heavy/bulky to carry so...we are going to look at XD subcompact :D She will be getting her CCW permit shortly and once she does I see a Sub our future :D Now if they only made a XD45 sub.....

As for the 165 vs 180, the first target was 165gr and second was 180gr. I too think the 180 is better. Which brand(s) of ammo did order? I was thinking of getting some Magtech which I use in my 45.
