Deer drive should be illegal.

I agree that it eliminates a bit of fair chase, but any further restrictions are just going to put more people out of the game. Let ER rip tater chip.

Let me rephrase this, it should be illegal on public land. Private lands, i could care less. It's just dangerous. Even with blaze orange on, can you really spot every single hunter within sight while you're fixated on the running deer? i think not. This also took place in the marsh and it's quite thick even during winter. You couldn't see someone in blaze orange pass 50 yards. Now add the excitement of shooting at running deer with semi-auto's and things can turn ugly fast.

okay, didn't mean to offend anyone. It all boils down to safety. I don't care if the next guy shot all the deer. I only care that I can go back home alive. It's public land. Expect that there will be others in the area between the drivers and shooters.

Sooooooo, you want anything you don't do, illegal only in the areas you hunt? Again, you whine about safety, but only if it's on public land? If drives are so dangerous, why allow them on private land? I probably know the area you are talking about. Folks not on deer drives also get excited, shoot at running deer thru scopes and don't always think about what's behind their target. So, lets make shooting at running deer with the use of a scope, illegal on public land too, eh? Maybe, for safeties sake, we should have a lottery for folks that hunt public land and thus not only make it safer to hunt there, but to increase the odds of hunter success. Maybe we should only allow folks that are bowhunters to hunt public land during gun season because they are such better hunters.........

I've bowhunted for 50 years. Took my first buck @ 14 with a 55# Bear "Super Necedah" recurve and wooden arrows. Can't even count the numver of deer I've taken with a bow on both private and public land over the years. I know folks that have never bow hunted in their life that knw more about deer hunting than I ever will. I also know some bowhunters that know less about deer hunting than my 7 year old grand-daughter. Just because you're a bowhunter does not make you superior to those using drives. Actually by your own words they got shooting and got deer......you did not, and no body got hurt. Again, this thread seems more about methods and not safety, because you have not presented any safety issues that hunting other methods, does not produce also.

I haven't been on a deer drive in 20 years. Having a small hunting party we prefer "pushes" that move deer thru the woods and not to designated standers. We know the escape routes that the deer generally take and know where others in our party are at. We do not know where every other hunter is. But then you and your girlfriend didn't either. You said so yourself....you couldn't see for more than 50 yards. How are any of your shots going to be more safe than any of those by those in the deer drive. You make sure of your target and what's beyond.....period. Don't matter if your hunting with your girlfriend in a blind, still hunting or making a drive. As I said before, those folks moving deer probably meant you and your girlfriend saw deer you otherwise probably wouldn't have. You don't want others hunting by you, buy some land of your own, or get and and move to another spot on public land. Thinking that you can have one plan, or one stand with no other options while hunting public land and you are going to be just what you are....frustrated and upset.

"...our spot..." If that's on publicly owned land, it's not your spot.
"...a group of 20+ decided to..." How do you know it wasn't planned in advance and advertised by somebody? A group of 20+ doesn't just decide to run a drive without some kind of organization. Mind you, doing so without ensuring it's safe is irresponsible. However, if driving is legal in WI, you don't get to decide when and where it can be done.
"...also dangerous..." You fire any distress shots into the ground or blow a whistle or otherwise let 'em know you were there?

buck460XVR,

quit getting so butt hurt like a little girl, ok? Just because no one was hurt or killed that day doesn't mean it's safe. I can drive my car 160 mph down the freeway a couple of times and most likely will not kill anyone or myself, but is it safe? I can safely assumed you're just like the other rambos during opening day. have a good day.

Sunray,

Doesn't matter if planned or not. Did I know that? Did other hunters know that? Did the drivers and shooters know there were other hunters in the woods too? It really boils down to safety. I'm not gonna argue with rambos like you guys anymore. Just don't shoot anyone by accident in the future. Gun deer brings out all the Rambos and hardcore Call of Duty players. lol
