Definition of "Heavily Armed"

3 guns and more than 100 rounds per gun, and not going to the range. Or an AR and a handgun with 6 mags and 150 rounds of pistol ammo. Just an example. If you are walking around with more than a special ops guy, you are heavily armed. Carrying 2 guns is pretty common, when you go to 3, you either are doing a dangerous job, or plan on some kind of confrontation, aside from a planned range session, or some sort of training. I am speaking about just walking around the neighborhood.
It would seem strange for someone who was just going shopping or to work to have an exorbitant amount of weapons and ammo on them.

Depends on the event- running errands more then two sidearms;
Hunting- more then a rifle plus ccw
Range time- I don't think you can be heavily armed at range time
In the Mexican border running errands?- more then a long- arm and two sidearms

Word play

I do love when the press reports that a man was arrested with a cache of weapons and ammo or an arsenal.
870 with 5 boxes of birdshot
10/22 with 500 rounds
9mm glock with 200 rounds

This is an arsenal to most members of the press.

As far as this post: J frame loaded with 5 rounds - Armed
Add a speed loader - armed better
add 2 speed loaders - armed even better
etc. - never heavily armed

I've gone to the range with four fully automatic weapons and a truck bed pretty much full of ammo. Was I heavily armed? Depends on who I'm coming up against. A cactus might consider me heavily armed but that's not my definition.

The media would consider a Chiappa 1911/22 and a box of 50 rounds "an arsenal" but then they consider pretty much anything firearms related an arsenal.

Being overrun and killed with plenty of ammo left or killing all attackers and having plenty of ammo left.
Really though how often does one hear it used outside of the media trying to hype the situation of some gun owner or criminal shooter. It's not an endearing term in most cases.

'Armed' vs. 'heavily armed' vs. 'armed for bear?'

Armed = you have the right to bear arm(s).

Heavily Armed = (media term mostly) you brought more than two guns to the party, in case there are bears.

Armed For Bear = you are armed and aim to misbehave/mix it up/go LOOKING for a bear and poke it in the eye*.

*doesn't matter how many guns you have if there's no ammunition, better have a knife too.

i'm all for being properly armed.

there is the minimum for leaving the house to walk the dog and than there is going into town, where anything can and does happen.

some will say that a 380 in my pocket is not enough and others may opine that a 642 and a 1911 are too much...
but 2 guns not cause one may fail but more so cause life comes at you from all directions and as you have 2 hands -- why not double your options

Good answer

Heavily armed is having your gang at your back with all sorts of 'banned' weapons.

Chuck Norris Answer:

Philosophical Answer:
Heavily Armed is a mindset not a toolset.

My idea of "heavily armed" is if going into 'badlands' so to speak,I pack 3 handguns and spare ammo for at least 2 of them.
AND then a long gun [ or 2 ] in my vehicle = AND all are loaded.
This is also how I travel cross country [ but long guns are not loaded ].

This is analogous to my thoughts on Driving

Anyone going faster than me is nuts, anyone going slower is an idiot.
Therefore anyone more armed than I am is Heavily Armed.

As several have said already the answer varies with the situation. If just walking on the road a pistol in my pocket is "armed" so heavily armed must be a loaded back up clip.:)

Heavily armed is me in my car on most days

1911 on my right hip with two spare mags on my left hip. S&W 357 in console. Springfield XDs in door pocket along with spare mag. Ruger LC9 in glove box along with 2 spare mags. Glock 23 in back of vehicle in tool bag with 4 spare mags. Two cases with several 1911's, Glock's, Rugers, S&W's etc. Another bag with an lcp and 6 or so spare mags for my primary. Two to four AR-15's with 4-6 loaded mags in their carry cases. Some days I might have a shotgun or Saiga on board as well. Does that qualify?

It could also mean a man or woman with a weapon who weighed over 400 lbs

Yes. Yes it does. Not that that's a bad thing.

Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Unforgiven. "If I get shot, I don't want it to be for lack of shooting back."

My favorite is "I can assure you that neither my companion nor I carry firearms on our person. We rely upon the goodwill of our fellow man, and the forbearance of reptiles." That one doesn't really tie into the conversation. Sure is funny, though.

This is a bad joke. Chuck Norris needs to be tied up with kryptonite.

**Note for the admin. Every time I want to quote someone here, I have to add the HTML tags myself. Am I missing something or are the quotes not set up on this site?

For me the definition falls somewhere between; "To much weaponry/ammo to swim if you fall in the water." and "So much you can't walk up a flight of stairs without having to stop and wait for your quads to quit burning."
