In a day or two I'm going to be finally making an order to Del Ton for a LONG planned Ar 15 build. This being my first Ar, and not a small ammount of money, I was wondering if I could get you guys to look it over and see if maybe I'm missing something.
I'm going with their 16" Mid length rifle kit found here:

http://www.del-ton.com/Rifle_Kit_p/rkt104.htm

It's mostly going to be their stock rifle, but I'm paying extra for the chromed barrel and bolt and carrier. Oh and the m4 feed ramps, cause it's not much more and can't really hurt.
As it's my first Ar, i'm not really upgrading any of the funiture, I'll use it as is and see what I like and dont like.
Any thoughts on what I've selected? Will this make a good first "shoot and get to know the Ar platform" rifle? Are there any other mechanical upgrades I should go with?
Oh and if It makes a difference it's going on a DPMS lower...
Thanks for reading! Any advice you might have is appreciated. I've done quite a bit of research, but might be getting a little nervouse at the price tagLOL

Del-ton is awesome. best value in AR's if you ask me
it will serve you well. dont get anxious at all.

I built the same kit back in April, but with an A2 (fixed carry handle) upper.

You will not be dissappointed...IF you can actually get it. Call them and place the order over the phone and make sure you ask what is and isn't in stock!

I waited almost two months...and that was when the "rush" was just beggining.

Your list sounds good to me.

Don't forget to choose an option for Iron sights.

If I had picked a flat top, I'd have chosen to use BUISs.

Many say don't bother with the detachable carry handle, as it will get zero use if you put optics on it.

I opted for the chrome lined barrel, but it was a coin toss. Many, many will tell you that unless your planning on tramping through the jungle and shooting lots of rounds over several months and not ever cleaning the bore, you'll never miss it.

Chrome lining is really more for extending the life of barrels that get a lot of full auto use.

Chrome lined barrels are NOT the target shooters choice.

If I were to do it again, I'd stick with the non-chrome lined chrome molly barrel and put the $50 towards a match trigger.

But what ever you do, get your order in as soon as you can....

Oh yeah.... don't forget... get mags! They have good prices on P-mags... get at least two tossed in the box with your kit and spare yourself paying shipping on them later.

I thought about trying to get their complete lower with buttstock to have put away. Hell, if I could ever get through to them I might pick up 2 of them.

I tried calling them today, numerous times with no luck.

I agree with the M4 feed ramps for $25. I'm not convinced that a chromed BCG is really that big of a deal. $55 will buy a bunch of lube, and running a BCG wet is important.

I think that's a great idea.

For your intended purpose I think you've picked a great setup. You don't plan to run it hard, so there's no need to pay for more expensive parts that are recommended on ARs that will be.
Everything they have is Mil-spec right?
Dimensionally, yes, so mil-spec parts will fit. Materials and testing wise, not all of it. Do you need an H Buffer, parkerizing under the FSB, 1:7 twist hard chromed HPT/MPI bbl, HPT/MPI bolt in a shot peened carrier, etc? If you don't then don't worry about it. If you intend to run it hard, the extra insurance those parts provide may be worth it. Figure out what you want / need and buy accordingly.

that's a LOADED question....

the mil spec requires that certain parts (bolt carrier is one if I'm not mistaken) are magnetic particle inspected.

This is a non-destructive testing technique that "should" catch a part with an internal defect (i.e. void cavity within the metal).

The odds of having that kind of defect are very low.... in the order of one in 5,000 or so.... If you mag. particle test, you should catch "most" of those defects (say 99 out of every 100). So that would lower the over all defect rate down to one in every 500,000.

If this is going to be your NO KIDDING duty/patrol rifle and your life will depend on it every day....I'd want the extra reassurance.

I believe that only CMMG, LMT and Colt actually fully comply with the testing part of the mil. spec. And thus those rifles cost several hundred dollars more.

If this is going to be your fun gun, range gun, SHTF gun....I'd think you could live with the higher odds of having a defect (which may or may not cause a failure....depending on how hard you drive it).

Unless of course you want internet bragging rights, in which case you absolutely require it..... :neener:

"Mil-spec" is a very misleading term. something that isnt milspec can be top notch Grade A quality. and something that is milspec could suck badly. and in many cases TRUE mil spec can come down to ridiculous details that have no effect on the rifle.

if your wondering if Delton rifles will accept standard military parts w/o trouble? yes, they absolutely will.

Wow, lot of good responces here, thanks guys! It's good to hear again Del ton is a good company.
I'm expecting a bit of a wait. A day or so after the election the front page of their site announced they werent doing any gun shows this year and were a little slow with things... With their reputation, im willing to wait a bitLOL

Sorry for the massive quote, but there was a lot there I wanted to reply too...
You brought up a VERY good point on the chrome lined barrel I hadn't considered. I knew they weren't great for accuracy, but was willing to sacrifice a little for longer barrel life. But since this won;t ever see full-auto, and I'm almost religious about cleaning my guns, I think you might have saved me some extra moneyLOL
As or the BUIS, already got 'em. I might eventually end up with some sort of optic, but for right now I want to learn the rifle with standard iron sights.

Good to hear that, thank you. That was one of the choices I was kinda going back and forth on. I finally figured it's not much more money and what I researched said It wasnt going to foul anything up IF I had it...
As for the chromed BCG, I guess I've been brainwashed by a few buddiesLOL

Do you mean the ones made by Magpul? I've already got one and compared to the other brand I have it seems better madeLOL Do you recomend them?
As for the price, your right, their great. I got mine from Cheaper than dirt at 19.97. Two days after the election their up too 29.97. Del ton STILL has them for 14.95, I think they might get a little more of my businessLOL

Dispatch55126: VERY nice pic, thank you! Mines going to be a bit different configuration, but it's nice to see a "real" pic of what I'll be getting.
How have you liked it? Any ammo in particular I should stay away from?

On Chromed Barrels

I don't know how well Del-Ton (or their barrel supplier) hard chromes bores and chambers. However, a hard chromed bore does not necessarily mean reduced accuracy.

When the FBI opened competition for a new counter sniper rifle FN won the contract with their SPR A3 G. The SPRs use a Winchester Model 70 controlled round feed action mated to an FN chromed bore barrel, all sitting in a McMillan fiberglass stock. The SPR A3 G's chromed barrel allowed it to meet the FBI's desire for a rifle that could maintain sub 1/2 moa performance for 10,000 rounds with the original barrel.

I don't know if they offer it, but I use the Magul MOE grip. It fills the hand beter than the stock A2 grip.

Other than that, buy as many mags as you can afford.

oh, are we posting Del-ton pics? heres mine.

Ban style A4 setup ( and yes i know my rear sight is too far forward)

Forgive a newbie question, but what is the benefit of a midlength rifle versus the M4/carbine length? Does that extra couple inches before the gas block make a difference in how it shoots?

In theory, it makes a difference in reliability and wear characteristics. There was a thread in Rifle Country a week ago that rehashed the topic quite nicely. Take a look.

"if your wondering if Delton rifles will accept standard military parts w/o trouble? yes, they absolutely will."

That's all I wanted to know

Pretty sure the exception is sights. I believe Del-Ton uses "standard" front sight bases on their flat top uppers. That means any mil-spec rear sight will not work, unless you get a 0.040" taller front sight post. I'd call Del-Ton and ask if they use F-marked front sight bases on flat tops, to be sure. But I'm 99% sure they don't.

that's how I felt....

that and I couldn't afford an AimPoint or EOTech.

Personally, I use standard aluminum mags (from a secret source) with the orange or green followers. I'd like to get PMags, as everyone raves about them, but prefer to spend the money elsewhere.

If Delton has any left @ $15... get all you can...

Don't believe anything you see on their web site though... these guys have all booked more orders in the last 3 weeks than in the last 3 months and have no time to update their web. sites.

Pick uf the phone and keep dialing untill you get through.
