I had never tried to declare a handgun on curbside checkin, but this morning the Delta clerk did a texbook job! I did my part, unloaded handguns in hard locked case, ammo in box in separate bag, even mags in separate bag, but the lady at the counter was perfect.I told her so and she said "looks like you've done this before too". Out of many good experiences this was the best.

I wish that could be my job.

I would do it right and I would get to see all kinds of neat guns.

Instead it is usually some wahoo put their by a professional beauracrat for reasons unknown. Kind of like how the ATF employs a bunch of people that know little about firearms.

Anyway, I am glad you had a good experience and hopefully there will be many more to come.

The easiest job I have had checking in a firearm was Continental at O'Hare. Yes that's right Chicago. Fast, easy, and no one varied from procedures laid out by TSA. Even the TSA people who I usually find try to make up rules as they go along sometimes.

I have read that the vast majority of lost/misdirected bags are checked curbside. I'm glad things went well, but I generally avoid them.

Link
A surprisingly high percentage of lost and stolen luggage (87% in one year) originates at curbside check-in stations; avoid them.

Although I've never flown with a firearm, in my many years of international and domestic airline travel I've never lost any luggage; once had my suitcase delayed for two days in Jordan......Just lucky, I guess.
