WASHINGTON

Democrats forced the Republican-controlled Senate into an unusual closed session Tuesday, questioning intelligence that led to the Iraq war and deriding a lack of congressional inquiry.

"I demand on behalf of the America people that we understand why these investigations aren't being conducted," Democratic leader Harry Reid said.

Taken by surprise, Republicans derided the move as a political stunt.

"The United States Senate has been hijacked by the Democratic leadership," said Majority Leader Bill Frist. "They have no convictions, they have no principles, they have no ideas," the Republican leader said.

Reid demanded the Senate go into closed session. The public was ordered out of the chamber, the lights were dimmed, and the doors were closed. No vote is required in such circumstances.

Reid's move shone a spotlight on the continuing controversy over intelligence that President Bush cited in the run-up to the war in Iraq. Despite prewar claims, no weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq, and some Democrats have accused the administration of manipulating the information that was in their possession.

Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, was indicted last Friday in an investigation that touched on the war, the leak of the identity of a CIA official married to a critic of the administration's Iraq policy.

"The Libby indictment provides a window into what this is really all about, how this administration manufactured and manipulated intelligence in order to sell the war in Iraq and attempted to destroy those who dared to challenge its actions," Reid said before invoking Senate rules that led to the closed session.

Libby resigned from his White House post after being indicted on charges of obstruction of justice, making false statements and perjury.

Democrats contend that the unmasking of Valerie Plame was retribution for her husband, Joseph Wilson, publicly challenging the Bush administration's contention that Iraq was seeking to purchase uranium from Africa. That claim was part of the White House's justification for going to war.

Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., said Reid was making "some sort of stink about Scooter Libby and the CIA leak."

A former majority leader, Lott said a closed session was appropriate for such overarching matters as impeachment and chemical weapons _ the two topics that last sent the senators into such sessions.

In addition, Lott said, Reid's move violated the Senate's tradition of courtesy and consent. But there was nothing in Senate rules enabling Republicans to thwart Reid's effort.

As Reid spoke, Frist met in the back of the chamber with a half-dozen senior GOP senators, including Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, who bore the brunt of Reid's criticism. Reid said Roberts reneged on a promise to fully investigate whether the administration exaggerated and manipulated intelligence leading up to the war.

If these Democrats think Bush 'lied' then why did they enrage their base and vote to give Bush authorization in the 1st place (Feingold exempted(?

Democrats are ruining our democratic republic with their asinine antics! Denying votes on nominees, invoking strange Senate rules, and threatening fillibusters moves them into Obstructionists by classification. Bush won the election: get over it.

I am happy to see Frist and Reid stop pretending to get along. Keeping the Dems happy will not be a priority. It is a great setup for a nuclear option re Alito, hardball being the rule of the day, thanks to the Democrats.

the Democrats are a pathetic excuse for an opposition party, but the Repulicans are a pretty poor excuse for a party as well. It's obvious that the repub's don't want to discuss the war they started and why they can't control it.

What a sad country we live in.

Guys, I honestly think this is the best thing for us.

Over the last few years we have had the majority, but we still have acted like the minority in the Senate. We tried to co-operate when there was no need to, and it was counter to our desires.

Frist has been too leniant throughout all of this.

What happened today just showed him how the (D) side of the aisle is going to work, and will encourage him to have a backbone.

Frist just learned the hard way that the Democrats in Congress are not his friends, and he needs to learn how not to give into all of their desires.

The domocrats are nothing but lowlife scum without morals what so ever. Look at the Dailey machine in chicago! A perfect example............end of story.:banghead:

Maybe this will allow everyone to stop pretending to respect the Senate. Some Senators are highly respectable, but the Senate as a whole is a joke.

Why did the declare a closed session if they wanted the american people to know?

So they kick out the public so they can let the public hear the truth.

As Rush Limbaugh said, we want this fight!
Uh, yeah, if Republicans will actually fight for a change, instead of dropping their pants and grabbing their ankles again.

Have you read the actual resolution they voted on?

The Republicans held six secret sessions to discuss Clinton's impeachment.

The Democrats force one to talk about the exposing of a CIA agent by the White House (an official of which is under indictment for obstructing the investigation) and they're hijacking traitors who need to be "order #66'd"

For those not up on pop culture, order #66 is a reference to the latest Star Wars movie when the evil emperor orders the soldiers of the republic to turn against their Jedi Generals and assassinate them.

Absolutely...

I want us to SHOVE IT DOWN THEIR THROATS, just like they did to us for forty years. Let them run out Shumer, Kennedy, the Frenchman, and the rest to whine to the cameras, the more the better.

If they think their side can win, then tell the Truth to the American People... Not use the Socialist Mainstream Media for their cover. If you REALLY look, their agenda and their hypocricy (although it is hard to be a hypocrite, if you don't stand for anything), will come out.

The Mainstream Media is dying as their propaganda is discovered and uncovered. They can't SPIN us anymore. They don't tell us what to think, and they hate it. When the American people finally realize how much and how long we have been lied to... (a wish, I know...)

The Democrats voted for war because they believed G. W. Bush’s “lies” or “faulty intelligence” or “rotten tea leaves” or whatever the excuse is this week. Look at it this way …

The Democrats are bed-wetting pansies who hate war, correct? But they hate guns and other weapons even more, correct? So the President offered them an opportunity to disarm Iraq of its deadly weapons of mass destruction, correct? Therefore they voted for a war to accomplish their arms-control agenda, correct? Thus when no WMDs turned up in Iraq, they realized that they had been duped into supporting a plain old regular war, which they never would have supported if it hadn’t been about gun control—I mean WMDs, correct?

Of course, all the Republican apologists jumped on the disarmament bandwagon right along with them.…

They'll be taking hostages soon ~ The Democrat Party is Finished!

Seems to be the end of line for the American Democrat Party. Wonder what my old friend John F. Kennedy would think if he could see the implosion of his once great political party. It's been run into the ground by recent current horde of common lunatics, garden variety socialist rats, liberal nut jobs, sexual perverts, closet stalinists, run of the mill traitors, demented commies, treasonous vermin, drug burned-out hippies, marxist thugs, whores, thieves, would-be euro-scum and mindless idiots of all types. The whole thing abounds in irony with JFK's own surviving brother, Teddy the Swimmer being principle miscreant in the Democrat collapse. :neener:

As a former member of long ago, can honestly say, I believe that the Democrat Party in finished ~ KAPUT! All these maggots have left are the tactics of subversion and overthrow. :uhoh:

This whole thing was, is, and will remain a tempest in a teapot. Secret meetings are just a way to make it look important. If the meetings were public, it would be apparent that the issue lacks substance.

You got to hand it to Reid though. With the limited cards he has, he has beat the heck out of Frist and W. Just remember, it was just a couple of weeks ago Reid selected Harriet Myers for the Supreme Court.

Frist and the rest of the Republican Senators are a bunch of girlie men. My 6 year old daughter has more guts and smarts than them all combined.

What is the line .... better to be a herd of deer lead by a lion, than a herd of lion lead by a deer ..... Frist is bambi.

Turns out that the committee was ready to report some time ago, but the Democrats on the committee blocked it. In other words, this thing was planned as a grandstanding ploy. They are so pathetic with their partisan squabbling.

Well, it appears to have been a bit of stunt, but it was resolved for the moment after only two hours. and whatever the reasons are that a report has not been issued, the Democratic Minority leader was not out of line to request the report.

So yeah, it may have been a bit childish, but it wasn't a takeover. just a little pouting with a touch of justification thrown in.

we'll get over it. and if we're lucky, we'll find out something embarrasing. (like Democrats killing the report)
