hey guys, Dicks sporting goods is having a buy one get 50% off on ammo. ii had heard that Dicks is less than honest with thier sale prices. ( raising regular price right before puting out a "sale") anybody with any experiance? i dont want to drive out there and deal with crowds if its not a good deal.

(also have a Mossberg Plinkster 22 for 80$ but i dont think i can buy it because of MA's gay "high capacity" laws)

they had the same deal last year.

i think it is pretty good for some kinds of ammo but the stuff I am usually interested in it is not.

I can't say for an absolute certainty that they raise the "regular" price ahead of time so that the discount sounds better than it really is.

gander's ammo prices are always competitive with dick's and they have a much better selection.

I have seen the Plinkster for sale at Wal*Mart, specifically the one in Buzzard's Bay,in MA.
I don't know where there are other Dick's locations in MA but the one in Plymouth doesn't carry much in the way of handgun ammo.I usually just swing over there to see if anything's on sale when I head to M&M.

About the only ammo I will buy from there is when they run 9mm Remington at 5.88 or so when you buy a case... but honestly, it's right on par with case prices where I usually shop.

They do have a lot of accessories and odds and ends though. I got a cheapo Simmons red-dot for like 25 bucks a few weeks ago.

The Dick's near me only carries shotgun and rifle ammo. Nothing in the handgun calibers

I wish I could get a case of 9mm for $59. . .

I do not care for Dick's AT ALL - I'd choose gander mountain any day of the week and twice on Sunday over Dicks. Their ammo selection is nothing short of abysmal, and on top of that I've gone in there three times fully prepared to buy a shotgun, and have been completely ignored by the staff. I won't give them the time of day anymore - if my money isn't green enough for them, I'll spend it elsewhere.

I don't have any experiance with the dishonest pricing thing - but it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

10 boxes of 50. 500 rounds. NOT 1000 lol. Just making sure you don't think they are THAT cheap lol.

Last time they had that deal, I got four boxes of 250 bulk UMC. 2 .45 and 2 .40sw. When I went to check out, she rang all four of them up as 50% off. 1000 rounds for $60. :neener:

Oh, Good Lord, do not get me started on Dick's Sporting Goods!

The one near my home in Danvers, MA has the worst customer service and absolutely clueless employees behind the gun counter. And even though their prices on long guns are usually a few bucks cheaper, I drive twenty miles or so to a gun shop I like and pay the slightly higher prices. The guys at the gun shop are friendly, knowledgable and helpful. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about the kids at Dick's.

I'll occassionally buy rifle or shotgun ammo there for a range session because it's closer but that's it.

yeah they aren't the brightest people in the world and not the greatest in the customer service aspect, but they do have good prices on there ultramax ammo and the military discount really helps out to. i pay the employes there no mind and go get my ammo and get out.

hmmm. well i think i may head down. and check the prices on the ammo i know ( 10 box "case" price of #7 shot shells for 2.92 a box) if i can get that witht he cupon i may be happy. though i want that rifle.

fellow MA guys in here. any idea if the Plinkster is a "high capacity" rifle in MA. from my understanding it is but i suck at reading laws.

I won't say which Dick's

But I've been buying the Remington .40 S&W 185gr FMJ's for 9.98 per "box" of 500 ! Some cashiers are totally clueless. Happened four times (1 "box" each) with three different cashiers. :D

Me happy. :D

You mean there are actually people (even if clueless) who are supposed to work behind the gun counter at Dick's? Every time (and I mean EVERY time) I've been by the local box, the place has been deserted. Last time I was there I decided not to even waste my time any more, I won't be back unless they are allowing you to pick out what you want and walk out with it.

Poor customer service, clueless employees, and sorry selection (they go by corporate planograms and can't special order much if any) are the side effects of "I won't buy from my local gun shop. I can get it cheaper at S-Mart, Wally world, Dick's, etc.
I don't shop at dick's or any of the big box stores anymore for that very reason. Costs me about a dollar more per box of 357 for reloads, but I'm happy to pay that to 1. not fight box store traffic, and 2. to help keep my local shop in bidness.
The local shop (On Target shooting range/gun store off sweeten creek road in Asheville) is stocked with nice people and usually a good selection, not to mention they host shoots and Concealed classes.
Worth paying for.

I've had EXACTLY the same experience, worse even than Walmart, where I've been known to make an APPOINTMENT to buy ammo.

There's just nobody at the Walmart sporting goods counter. At Dick's, somebody will actually be there and not help you. It once took me 2-3 times of stopping somebody in the aisle to get help, and then still not from the guy screwing around with the fishing gear who stood and watched me the whole time with not so much as a, "I'll be with you in a minute."

I don't like them much either. But when they did the 50% off ammo sale I bought some, when I added in the Win and Rem rebates I got the ammo cheaper than I could have gotten it anywhere else.

They are not much help in the customer service arena. However, I find their ammo supply to be pretty good and usually the best price in my area (with the sales/coupons added in).

Soon, I'll be returning to a free state though where I will have options again!

Hoppy590 - if it holds 10 rounds or less, you need an FID and that's it. 11 or more for rifles and that's "high capacity". 6 or more for shotguns, same deal.

If it were 10 or more = high capacity, then I couldn't have bought my SMLE when I lived in MA.

This week they have Remington 9mm 115 gr FMJ for $5.98 per box, if you buy 10.

On Sunday 11/19, Dick's sent out their weekly flyer in the local paper in NE OH with the case (10 - 50 round boxes) price of $5.98/box. The sale prices, however, was only good for 4 days ending on Wednesday, 11/22. Yesterday, 11/23 Thanksgiving Day (Dick's was closed 11/23), they had sent out their "Friday and Saturday Only - 2 Day Hunting Sale" flyer with the 50% coupon. Lo-and-behold, case price for Rem UMC is now $6.98/box.

Beware the bait & switch and other games @ DSG...

I had this experience the LAST time DSG ran this 'sale' back in october. Buyer Beware...

Tried to buy ammo @ Dicks'. Coupon on the internet site said "buy one get another @ 50% off" , but I also happened to notice that the 'regular' price of 9mm had supposedly gone up to $8.99...that's up from 6.48 a month ago.... Soooo, the 'sale' price with "buy one and get one" would now total $13.50 per 100. SOME SAVINGS, HUH?

If you manage to catch their more normal 5.98/50 with 500 deal the price isn't too bad , and would break down to 11.96/100, but otherwise these 'sale' coupons just serve to rip off the unwary.

They are also not above ripping off the un-alert at the register either. Every time i have bought ammo there, the register always rings the 'regular' price, the checkout person always has to call a supervisor, and the supervisor always gives me a hard time till i make him or her look in their current flyer. Again, buyer stay alert!
