Dick's Sporting Goods......

Where I live there are both stores and they will be going to only one store location, here Gaylan’s has always had a much larger selection of firearms , also a better selection of fishing , kayaking equipment . Dick’s had gotten to be more sport clothing store when compared to Gaylan’s. We just got a Gander Mountain which has more of everything than the other 2 chain stores.

I grew up and still work frequently in the town where Galyans is headquartered. Its going to be hard to imagine the effect of this buyout, but I suppose thats reflective of most businesses these days. Dicks moved into this market this spring to go head to head with Galyans in their own backyard so to speak. Its been reported that a buyout had begun about the time of Dicks moving in. Galyans stock price had slipped and I believe their most recent quarter showed additional losses, thus making it hard to turn down the Dicks offer. All that aside, I have only been in Dicks twice, and since I don't golf, I didn't see where they could hold a candle to Galyans in overall merchandise. Just another case tho, of the bigger companies taking over all the little ones. Galyans was just a distant memory to me anyway, once they went "uptown" and got away from their trading post days.

Wow, this is a surprise (to me). Maybe Dick's will now have at least a normal selection of guns. The Galyan's here in OH have a better selection of hiking, mountaineering, and biking gear.

Here Galyans has a much better selection of guns and hunting gear. As mentioned, Dicks seems more geared towards sports clothing. About the only thing Dicks has going for it, IMHO, is their ammo prices are usually better.

Not a big fan of Galyan's, but I do get a great deal on 9mm case-ammo there. They have a pretty good selection of handguns, and their prices are average to slightly-better than average, but the knowledge-level of some of their employees gives me the willies...

I was talking to one of the counter guys the other day, and from what he's heard, it's unlikely they'll continue to sell guns after the merger. Apparently he and the others have been given their walking papers.

I suppose if the suits have to cut something, it'll always end up being (sadly) the most controversial department.

I was discussing this with the Dick's salesman and he wasn't sure if Galyan's was going to cut back on the gun department. They are building a Galyan's about 15min away from me and about 5 min from a Dick's and he was saying he heard a rumor they were going to close the Dick's and mahe the new store a Dick's instead of Galyan's. That sucks because in NJ Galyan's is a store with a great selection and I don't want the new store they are building to have a smaller selection.

Re guns and gun stuff, Dick's sucks and Galyan's doesn't, IMO. I'll be sorry to see Galyan's and/or it's gun selection go if such a thing happens. I've gotten some stuff at good prices at Galyan's. And the Dick's I've been in seem a lot more low-end than does Galyan's.

Dick's isn't much better than Wal-Mart in the quality of sporting goods it carries. I'll be sad to see Galyans go the way of Dicks.

However, maybe now Galyans will start pricing the items on their shelves. It's not uncommon to see items with no indication of their price at all.

I'll just spend my hunting and fishing dollars at Cabelas or BPS.

Here in Virginia Beach, Galyan's had a grand opening of a store in our brand new "Town Center" complex last month... complete with their trademark climbing wall. We've been aware of this story for a week or more. This store is just 6 miles from Dick's.

I haven't yet visited Galyan's but I understand there are some good gun prices there... my local Walmart contact says this is so. I have been to Dick's and wasn't enthused about anything there - particularly the gun world. Help wasn't attentive either.

Guess I'll have to make a visit soon, huh?

In NJ, Galyans has a better selection, but in my experience Dick's has friendlier staff. Plus Dick's sponsors some of out local matches with both prizes and cash, so I can state quite safely that they are not anti-gun. Not that Galyans is, but it is good to know that the surviving company isnt.

Now, if Dicks would wake up and make the same deal with American Express that Sports Authority has it would rock. I love buying ammo with my "membership rewards" points, I just can't stand SA.

There's a Dick's moving into the old Famous Barr at the mall in Springfield. We don't have Galyan's down here, but I stopped in at one near Chicago out of curiosity and they didn't have a firearms section, so maybe this is all more or less a local issue.

Oh, well. I don't think they can beat Capital City Arms Supply anyway.

In Virginia Beach, the Galyan's has a much better gun selection than Dick's. Quite a few more rifles and lots of handguns-- Dick's has no handguns at all.

Ammunition selection at both is mediocre.

Dicks stinks. They used to sell handguns back in the day. At least in my neck of the woods they did. Don't really know why they stoped. Never been in a Galyan's but we were supposed to get one. I guess thats dead in the water now.

On the plus side we do now have a Bass Pro Shops (wich sucks), and they are building two Gander Mountian stores within a 40 min ride from me. There is also talk of a Cabela's coming to town. :D

Wolfy, I was thinking the same thing when I read Peetmoss's post.

You'll be :what: when you go into Cabelas for the first time. :D

It figures. I don't know why Dick's even has "sporting goods" in the name. Unless you're a golfer, their selection sucks.

I really miss Jumbo Sports here. They had a decent selection of everything - fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, boating, shooting, weight training, sports equipment, etc. It was awesome. Never have figured out why it closed.

Gaylans is a fun store to go to, but in the MN area their were lacking on their gun prices. They seemed a little high to me.

Galyans around here has a terrible selection for guns. But, if they have something you want, they usually have a good price on it.
