Dillon RL550B vs Hornaday LNL AP

25" from counter top to top of the powder dispenser.
Thank Blue. As fate would have it, my clearance is 25 1/2 inch. Would leave enough room to operate, but removal/changing/filling would be an issue. I'm planning some renovations soon and hope to be able to expand my reloading room a little. I was hoping to cash in on Cabela's deal right now, but perhaps I'll wait to see if (when) my expansion happens. My setup is under my basement stairs (inspired by the Harry Potter reloading bench).

Thanks!

NOTE!

Anyone purchasing a new Hornady LNL-AP.

You should Google;

Hornady LNL-AP Set Up Hints and Tricks.

It's a video series by Bill Morgan, he's better that the Hornady

Manual or CD.

The whole series is over at TheFirearmsForum as a STICKY

He goes by 76Highboy over there.

Time well invested to watch before your set up your press.

Sounds like you need to negotiate which room in the house belongs to YOU and is decorated and cleaned by you.
Haha. Yeah, only problem is that my big room is split up between my two primary hobbies (music & reloading) and I want to keep them separate. I need another room :) That isn't going to happen any time soon...

Howiepa,

I don't want to take this thread off topic, so I sent you a PM about the case feeder; hopefully it helps.

Can't you lower the bench a tad? Also make sure height measurements take into account the raising of the powder measure when case activated, because it moves up about 3/4" or so

For what it's worth, I phoned Hornady today to discuss the case feeder issues I've been having. After 5 minutes the tech said he'd put in a warranty order for new parts -- apparently some of the parts I have are warped or otherwise incorrect. He didn't ask when I got the press or when I got the case feeder, he just filled out a "warranty sales order". 20 minutes after hanging up with him I get two emails: an invoice (for $0.00) and a shipping confirmation with tracking number.

I think anyone would agree this customer service is great. We've all heard legends about Dillon's customer service, but so far Hornady is right up there.

My LNL AP came in today. I spent most of the evening cleaning parts and getting things ready to mount tomorrow. I'm going to watch Bill Wilson's videos one more time before we put any rounds though it.

BrianC636,

His video series will save YOU SOME HEADACHES for sure.:banghead:

Yes, Bill Morgan, not Bill Wilson. I did watch his videos before I even purchased the LNL. I've done everything he suggested thus far, now I just need to get some 40 bullets and a. new scale so I can start cranking out the ammo

I had the full LnL ammo plant with bullet and case feeders. It was surely the most cantankerous and unreliable machine I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. Fortunately the place I bought it had 100% satisfaction guarantee, so I sent the whole steaming pile back for a refund, and bought a Dillon RL550B.

I have never regretted making the change to the blue one.

That "steaming pile" is someone's pride and joy. Sorry you found a reason to downgrade features to a 550B level. Somehow I think there's more to the story.

Maybe I just got the right machine because video tutorials or not I have never had an issue with my Hornady LnL and would not trade it. All the talk about Dillon though and its superiority had me very curious about owning one but I wanted to make sure since I already have 3 different presses on the bench. Luckily I was able to use a friend of mines Dillon 550 and though nice and smooth I feel like it would be a step backwards in automation or for that sort of investment I could not rationalize it in my mind. Maybe I will try a 650 someday to compare.
