I just got my Dillon 550b last week. I didn't get a strong mount for it, I decided to try it without the strong mount first and then order one later if needed.

It appears that the strong mount makes the press sit entirely above the surface level of the bench where the press must be bolted flush to the edge of the bench with part of the press above the surface of the bench and part of it below the surface level of the bench when using the standard mount. It appears that the strong mount enables the press to be bolted anywhere on the surface of the bench and does not have to be flush with the edge of the bench. Does this sound right? Where is the cartridge collection bin bracket mounted when using the strong mount?

The strong mount does not need to be flush with the end of the bench, but you will need to give it enough hang-over to allow the handle to work through the entire range of motion.

The completed round bin will then hook to the strong mount with a separate attachment.

I was in the same boat as you. I almost purchased my RL550b without the strong mount. At the last min I decided to get the Strong Mount. I am glad I did. It distributes the load more evenly across the bench surface area. My bench sets at 36.75". With the strong mount I have no need to bend over. This also gets the press up on the bench and out of the way. Now I wish I would have got the empty case bin and bullet tray.

I made sheet metal bracketry for the bullet tray (used a Dillon regular bin) and the empty case tray (also a standard Dillon bin with a lip on one end). Since the brackets mount to the strong mount which is angled, I mocked up the brackets with cardboard to get the right bracket shape so that the bins would hang level once the brackets were mounted. Got the sheet metal stock from the Depot (it's not as heavy guage as the Dillon brackets, but works just fine), cut out the brackets after tracing the shapes from the mockups, folded to shape, drilled the mounting holes, painted flat black and mounted to the strong mount.

Total investment about $15 and an hours time.

I used my 550B for a l-o-n-ggggg time w/o the Strong Mount, and disliked having to perform the Dillon Lean as well as occasionally bumping into the press. I got the Strong Mount and Roller Handle and am now happy.

Here is my 550. If you look below the ammo bin, you can see the attachment that holds to bin on the Mount. And, yes, the attachment does come w/ the Mount.
