Since my MKIII is now wearing a Burris FastFire, it no longer fit in it's original box. I hit up a couple local sporting goods stores in search for a pistol case. After a disappointing couple hours I settled on a $30 Plano case.

After a short and smooth 5 mile ride home (I drive like an old man) I arrive at home and open the case to discover that my MKIII has moved! It wanders all over the place in there!

Disgusted I began looking at higher end cases and was completely turned off by subpar construction and high prices. I was whining to a buddy about this who happens to have a foam hookup. He told me that he could set me up with very nice foam that I could cut to fit myself.

My first thought was just to replace the foam in my current pistol case but then I thought why do I have to use a gun case? $30 for a cheap plastic box with cheap plastic latches?

I am trying to think of what kind of containers I can use that would work. My first thought was a metal toolbox but am not sure if it would be big enough. I was also thinking of cutting a complete outline of my gun in the top layer of foam in the bottom section of the case. The thought being that when I get another handgun I could simply get another piece of foam, cut another outline, and have removable inserts for every gun.

The foam comes in 1" layers.

What say you THR? What comes to mind on a container? Has anybody done anything similar? What do you think would be the optimal dimensions to accommodate just about every kind of handgun?

this doesnt apply to you since youre looking for a hard case but ill toss it in anyway in-case anyone else can benifit from it. i grew up darn poor to put it very lightly. dads gun cases (sleeves youd call them now im sure) were all made by my mom. she would just take a pair of his work jeans she was tired of patching and cut the legs off. then she would sew them together at the widest part and sew one end closed.

the result was something you could legally transport your gun in to go hunting, which was the primary use for a gun back then.

at least for us.

A quality soft case is cheaper than a crappy hard case. I would have bought one if I wasn't concerned about bumping the optics.

If you are going to get a plastic gun case of any kind then you want to buy pelican. Make sure it isn't a knockoff. Real pelican cases are hard to beat. My dad stored hundreds of thousands of dollars of astronomy equipment in them for years, even before anyone heard of them. They are almost bullet proof and I would hardly call them cheap. Yes, they are expensive but the reality of it is they are not much more than the knockoff cases by plano and so many other copycats out there but the quality, at least back in the day, was as good as you can get.

I was pretty much in your shoes when I came up with this idea, I bought some used Samsonite briefcases (I find them at fleamarkets), sturdy plastic with good latches, take/cut out the divider and anything that's not needed inside, I used 1 1/2" gray foam and stuffed it on both sides, just set your guns where they're far enough from each other and close the case, the foam forms around the guns and securely keeps them in place, you can also cut some areas for specific guns, endless possibilities.
Another plus is that it looks like a normal executive brief case when it's closed.
