Do any of you experienced shooters have time for .22's?

Welcome to The High Road, Auburn1992!

My cousin has been hanging out with a serious trap and skeet shooter for a while, and he decided that he needed his own shotgun (of course, everyone needs his or her own shotgun). He bought one last weekend at a gun show with his friend's advice. It's a Winchester pump, and he brought it to the farm today.

We took his new/broken-in-by-someone-else gun apart, cleaned it and lubricated it. Then I grabbed my Rem 870 and we put 300 rounds through our pump guns, blasting clay birds, and it was fun.

Then we went out behind the barn and shot reactive targets with our single shot .22 rifles until the sun went down. His is an Ithaca falling-block lever action that he got when he was a kid. Mine's a Remington 510.

And it was fun.

That's what .22s are all about.

Do I have time for .22???

Oh heck yeah!!!
I bought a slug of those 550 round bulk boxes of Remington and Federal .22 when Wallyworld had them for $9/box!! Now that centerfire ammo is through the roof, I'm sitting pretty like a clam on a warm beach!! :D
My Ruger MK-IIs and my AR-7 are gonna see a lot of action this summer!!!

I shoot and have "time" for 22LR as much as I do with 45Colt aka long colt.

I used to shoot more 9mm, 38Special Plus P, 357Magnum, 44Special, 44 Magnum and 45Colt not 45ACP than I do now. That was when I first got into firearms more and buying my own firearms. Self defense issues and learning it all!

My range time consists of 1/3 to 1/2 with various firearms in 22LR now. (When I was first into buying my own firearms in 1998, 1999, 2000 and on... I used MORE centerfire firearms.)

I had a Winchester 94-22 and she was a sweet shooter as were my Win 94Trappers. I own a Browning BL22 - she is a sweet shooter too. Same with the little Marlin Papoose.

Personally I am far more into handguns than rifles - rimfire or centerfire. To each their own. I learned on handguns and they still remain my favorite firearm to shoot.

(I posted about this on another thread and section here too.)

Best wishes and have fun if you get INTO 22LR shooting more. You get a lot of bang for your buck. If you hand load or reload your centerfire ammunition - you will come out ahead too.

We just picked up another 10 boxes of Federal for $11.97 each here in Western Montana. It was $5. or more @ the Sportsman's Warehouse store. Super Walmart was where we bought our ammunition. (Box = 550 cartridges not just 500.) The Federal brand has gone from about $8.97 to $11.97 for a NOT on sale price too. I have a couple of boxes left @ the just under $6.00 range too. Federal, Winchester, American Eagle and Remington. I prefer Federal in bulk and most of my firearms are NOT picky in ammo. Including the S&W Model 41. The formerly owned S&W 22A was a bit picky. MOST of my 22LR is in FEDERAL. My husband has some fancier/more expensive types of 22LR ammo too.

Have fun and shoot straight!

It's worth noting that shooting paper with a .22 isn't nearly as fun as shooting reactive targets (ie: tin cans) with one. If you live in an area where you can't shoot tin cans, that does decrease the enjoyment factor.
IME 20oz drink bottles have a better bounce to them...

Clays are fun too. Hitting the clay isnt too hard, but busting up the pieces can be a challenge.

I am 72 yrs old and got my first .22 at 9 yrs although I shot my father's before that. I am still shooting .22's at this time.
I have several .22 rifles and handguns but the most fun is with conversion kits in my 1911's and AR's.
I want an AR upper for .22 but they are either hard to find or expensive for the ones you can get right now(read custom ones)
I understand that some others(cheaper) are in the works.

Whenever I go to the range I always take my trusty Remington 572
pump with, Its an oldie but a goodie.
After my practise time with my CCW its 22lr time.

Most start shooting with a 22 and finish with a 22. My father can't shoot anything that the recoil may potentially impact his heart. So, it is pretty much 22 or nothing for him now. Like I said, you start and finish with 22's.

I shoot more 22LR than anything else. In fact, the last four rifles that I purchased were all 22LR. Yes, I like the 22.

I love my Marlin 81 bolt action .22, can shoot for hours and no where close to breaking the bank....Cheap fun and good practice.

seriously? .22 always have and always will be my favorite round to shoot. easy on the ears, easy on the shoulder, easy on the pocket book, it's just plain fun.

I get a huge amount of enjoyment plinking with my .22's. At our ranch I can set up spinner targets at 50 yards and shoot all day if I want. You can't do that with larger calibers, although a .44special does a fun job on full water jugs :D.

Shooting a .22 is the best way to practice your form, whether revolver, rifle, or semiauto. You can get rid of flinches. You can work on your grip, your stance, your breath control. And you can afford to do it again tomorrow if you wish.

What's not to like?

I've got probably a dozen .22 pistols and half a dozen .22 rifles.
What's not to like ? No recoil, less noise, cheap ammo and it will put a hole in a target. I love 'em.

Some calibers you can be satisfied with a few guns. Somehow, for me, I can't get enough .22's. There's a Weatherby XXII down at the pawn shop right now. Fantastic wood and calling my name.
