do punisher grips make your 1911 "nerdy"...?

A skull doesn't seem like a very nice symbol to put on a gun like the 1911. I prefer just smooth or checkered plain hardwood. If I were to have any symbols or engravings on my grips, they would either be manufacturer trademarks or something simple and stylish.

I might get those for mine! I think they're cool. I can't remember, but weren't the ones in the movie black skulls on black grips?

The grips will only be extra nerdy if you're caught not shooting it proficiently...

"P.S. I'm not John Moses Browning and maybe when I grow up and realize there is nothing fun in life anymore I will switch back to plain brown grips that it came with. I just hope I never grow up in that sense!"

good post, and darn it now I think I want a set for my Baer P2.

some of those grips look awesome.
Where is the contact information for that guy?

I want some nice custom grips like that for my BHP.... yet I have no clue where to look.

Ive been a card carrying member of the dork/geek/nerd fellowship since 96 and i say go for it with whatever grips you like punisher skulls biohazzard symbols dragons spartan helmets what ever your fancy
personaly ive thought about mimicing the movie firearms ive seen such as arnolds winchester lever from T2 and even punishers .45s
funding wont allow such guns right now but man do i really want them
as for all those saying its silly stupid or its not a toy its a real gun
adding odd grips that you dont personaly like does not make my gun a toy its still a firearm and it may be one im pretty good with

and not all of us own EVERY gun for HD SD tactical blah blah blah blah
some of us just own guns to shoot at the range

How about Biohazard grips? Seems appropriate to me. Maybe grips should have a disclaimer warning on them, backed up in Spanish, like read instruction maunal before using, not for use by persons under 18, or the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, person convicted of a felony, etc.

Duracoat it pink and put hello kitty grips on it for all I care, it's your gun.

That said, those grips are bitchin'.

Well, I'm 19 and sufficiently out-of-touch enough to have thought that those were just cool skull grips without getting the Punisher reference. But then, all the stuff I read is very, very old.

Personally I am more into blue and wood, but then I am very old-fashioned. Put what you want on it. If you are overly concerned about what other people will think about your gun, you probably aren't manly enough to shoot a 1911.

Don't care for all the hate on this thread however the court-case shooting argument is valid. I know people that hate handguns and think they serve no purpose except for murdering innocent women and children. Those follks on a jury looking at that gun? See ya in 10 to 20.

If it is strictly a range gun then do it. Just make sure you have something else loaded up for protection.

I can't believe all this 'it's a deadly weapon not a toy' talk. Like no one here on THR owns fun guns. I sure do. Beside my carry gun and my HD shottie they're all fun guns. I think I'll put a smiley on one and some skulls on another, in hopes I see some of these holier than thou "High Roaders" at the range.

Or maybe I have this all wrong. Perhaps I should never have fun with my guns or at the range. No smiling while shooting. Just solemn silence and introspection because of the deadly nature of the weapons we are firing. And no more shooting things for fun, especially pumpkins, and bowling pins, or anything that explodes. This isn't a game children, no fun allowed!

hmm. the point about the grips in a court case does make sense, but are you going to use the gun for hd? most of us only keep one nightstand gun, so if this isn't your nightstand (or carry gun), put whatever you want on it.

My reply will be brief since I am on my Crackberry.

I would never put "those" on my guns!

But those are not my guns. We tend to take ourselves way to serious. As someone quoted, Duracoat pink and add Hello Kitty grips. 20 years ago I had a "Mary Kay" pink Cannondale road bike. Now at 6'4" I was hard to miss, and did not fit with the serious group I road with, but it was fun.

Not every gun has to deadly serious and tatical.

Maybe my Norinco needs a coat of pink.

I am sorry, but as I read that I just couldn't keep the phrase "mall ninja" out of my head.

Of course, that is very hypocritical coming from someone who loves to buy Sig P6/225 just so he can Duracoat/Cerakote them in fun colors.

My only advice is to keep them off of a defense pistol, otherwise, have fun with them. If nothing else, everyone will have something to say about them. Just look at this thread. 8 pages of people who just had to say something... including me.

I'd do it. On a range gun. Can you imagine having to sit in court while it got waved around to the jury as evidence?

For me, the 1911 is a classic design. The steel of the slide and frame are nicely complemented with a gorgeous wood grip. If I went with a synthetic grip of any type, they'd have some lasers sticking out of them (Crimson Trace) and even then, they'd have a wood look to them.

But that is just my view on it. If you like what you've got, don't worry about it. If you conceal carry, nobody will see them anyway.

Its a resounding yes, they will make you look nerdy unless your friends are all mall ninjas. But who really cares, its your stuff. Decorate it however you like and learn to shoot it.

If you can beat someone in a match with it, they won't be laughing about your goofy grips.

Well, when it comes to things that you will look back on when you are a few years older, "Punisher" grips beat the hell out of a comic-book-violence tattoo that seemed like a good idea at the time...

They're at least as stupid, but eminently more reversible.

You can just throw the grips in the trash and put on some nice figured hardwood ones instead.

The tattoo wouldn't be so easy to put behind you as you motor down the road of life.

I have a pair of Syd Ryan "Snoopy - Sopwith Camel" grips for a 1911. I wonder what the jury would think of those if I had to shoot in self defense....

Sure why not, put a compensator on it too. Even though its somewhat pointless on a .45, I think it looks really cool

Call me a loser if you want, but I'm going to put Pachmayer American Legend grips on my 1911 when I get it. I got the idea when I saw them in a game.

DON'T DO IT ! NO ! NO ! It would instantly emasculate all of us and besides :
Wouldn't it make Jeff Cooper cry ?

LOL !!!!!

Very glad to see the "your gun - your choice" answers vastly outnumber the others.

I didn't read all 8 (!) pages of this thread, so if I'm echoing someone else, I apologize.

That being said, if you are involved in a shooting, it's likely the prosecuter is going to crawl up your backside with a microscope--do you really want to give him more to look at than necessary?

Then, after that's all done and you've spent a lot of time and money defending yourself, you might have a wrongful death civil suit to deal with. WAAAAY different rules there.

Just food for thought. Enjoy your gun!

For a carry gun, I'm a fervent believer in a plain vanilla appearance. You want the cops, jury, et. al. to have a clear image of you as Joe Boring Citizen who was forced to defend himself.
For a display piece or a range toy, be as flamboyant as you like. Anybody who gives you the stink eye over Punisher grips at the range has business of his own he really needs to be minding.

The beauty of a 1911 is that the grips can be swapped out, and the appearance of the gun changed, very easily.

The bummer of the 1911 is that the grips are so easy to make, take so little material even if it's a rare wood, ivory or horn, yet they are still so overpriced.:)

I'll tell you, if I were going to shape grips for a 1911 or a revolver, and each set sold for 100 bucks, it's pretty easy to guess which ones I'd rather make.
