Do you avoid topic on THR because they've been covered on TFL?

There are some great threads over in the archives at TFL.

I wonder if we should think about our obligation to build a similar archive here at THR. Those of us who visited TFL for a while got used to the value of the archives. A new member would come along and ask a question that had been asked 100 times. He or she would be referred to the archives and voila... a wealth of information in the old threads.

I started a thread over in Shotguns about HD guns that I knew had already been covered at TFL several times. But it was an interesting topic and one that was prompted by a thread here in General.

I guess my question is this: Should we refer folks to the resources at TFL? Or build a great archive here at THR? Or both?

I find it strange that no one here at THR has responded to a post by saying "check out TFL's archives." At least I haven't seen it.

Ok.... enough rambling... time for coffee and focus...

Well, over in Shotguns in particular, Dave McC had a pretty good memory for old posts. He often would lead a member to great information by referring to old threads.

But Tamara, you are right. 9mm vs .45 came up like clockwork. So did a host of other "debates."

You read something enough times, you start believing it. Now, hopefully you can distinguish between good & bad info!
 
Yep.

I was going to start a thread on Lee Harvey Oswald- but decided to check TFL threads- they were complaining even there that it had been done to death.
 
There is no reason to start a thread on a topic done to death on TFL or elsewhere simply because it isn't here yet. If you have something of substance to add to the collective knowledge, then great, post the new information.

I doubt most people are avoiding posting something here that they figure is on TFL. Heck, a lot of the people never bothered to check the archives at TFL (or on many other forums) before posting the same stuff that had already been posted there previously, sometimes that was current or posted just a few days earlier. Just look at how many times the following topics were posted on TFL because folks were too lazy to check the archives: .223 lethality, Glock v. 1911, 9 mm v. .45 acp, Colt v. other 1911s, how small of a caliber are you willing to carry for defense, best home defense pistol/rifle/shotgun, which should I use for home defense (pistol, rifle, or shotgun), cops can't shoot, do I have to tell the cop I am carrying during a traffic stop, rules of a gun fight, etc.

If folks aren't willing to check the archives where they are logged on already, what makes you think they would go to the trouble of checking the archives on some other board before posting here?
 
It's easier to post a link to the TFL thread...

Than re-invent the wheel here at THR. ;)
 
Both.

Some of the great threads on TFL cover facets of topics of interest that will never be equalled, and sometimes the original respondents with great posts simply don't want to bother repeating what they've already said. TFL as a library resource isn't going anywhere, and it should be used and cited, IMO.
 
The FL topics will show up soon enough. Just wait a few more days. Blackhawk is posting as much as possible:D
 
Looks like it's time for a new "P32: Good for bears?" thread.

I would repost a topic again, even if it was covered here recently. There's always different people that will look at the thread and offer different insight than other people did before.

And especially if the topic hasn't been covered in a long time it's good the start a fresh thread as things may have changed completely since the last time the subject was covered.

Websites tend to have a wandering audience and TFL was no exception. We've had members who were there since Day 1 and went down with the ship and others who posted a few times and vanished into the ether of the WWW. Thus, the active audience is constantly changing & subjects will reemerge as an infusion of "new blood" settles in. Fresh perspectives and new experiences are brought in by them and it was admirable how member welcomed them into the flock and included them.
 
If we avoided every topic that had been covered at TFL there would be a lot of empty pages here.
 
Nope. Never.

There's a couple bare few that must be further explored.

Will you buy into that a law has been passed & you should obey it- thing.

Will you?

IS the "high-cap" law even legal & will you abide by it?

Is any of the '68 Act legal & will you abide by it?

So many questions, & so little time ....
