Do you CC at the Range?

YES. You must. Just because you have your range firearms on you does not mean that you will be prepared for something. If something happens and you need a firearm you will not have time to load your firearm. You have to realize that if things do go bad they happen FAST. If you are caught with your pants down you are at a huge disadvantage. Plus in a situation where the bad guy(s) know you are armed (like at a shooting range) they will most likely try something when you are in between reloading. Also, they know you are armed and they could and probably would base their strategy on their knowledge of this. It would defintaly be to your benefit to have a firearm they do not know about. Also, even if you have a concealed weapon and you have a gun pulled on you, you are going to be at a huge disadvantage. I have been in a situation like this and it sucks. So don't think that even though you have a gun on your hip you are invincible. So keep you situational awareness up the best ya can and have fun, but know that when things go bad they can happen FAST and it is in your best interest to be as prepared as possible.

Also, if I was carrying concealed at a range I would never pull out my concealed weapon from its holster and shoot it, even if I had another firearm concealed on me. This is advertising that you do not need. You definately do not want people to know that you carry concealed. I bet you all could figure out why.

Cap, that's kind of bordering on paranoia. If I have to worry so much about getting jumped on the range that I have to go through that kind of trouble, I'm going to find someplace else to shoot.

I just happen to have my gun with me while I'm on the range. I never gave it that much thought. I give it about as much consideration as having my keys. When I'm driving, they're in the ignition; when I'm not, they're in my pocket.

I always carry concealed, even at the different ranges unless otherwise stated not to.I also always carry 2,the primary and 'bug',and dont always shoot them when I go to the ranges.I also do this to 'not to get sloppy',and realize the importance of why I carry conceal anyways.

so the answer is...YES.

No I do not think it is on the border of paranoia. I love the range where I shoot and feel safe there. The only time I have had a gun pulled on me was when I was target shooting in the woods. I was reloading at the time someone snuck up on me. I felt safe going into these woods as they were nearby my house in a rural area.

The main points I were trying to make in my rambling are that I think concealed carry at the range is a good idea, not advertising that you carry a firearm consealed (this could be an unintended consequence on the range), and to always just know that things can go from good to bad in the blink of an eye even in environments where you feel safe.

A few years ago, a man was killed while he was target shooting. He was at a closed rock quarry, alone, and was found dead...his guns gone.

This was in Wilson County, mid Tennessee. I happen to have property in Wilson, Co. I decided to start carrying while I shoot after this. Also, I do not go to deserted places alone to shoot.

Mark.

I try to fire my CC gun, a 642, on every range visit. Sometimes I bring it in the range bag, sometimes I CC, sometimes I OC. All depends on my mood. If I plan to stop on the way home for lunch, I bring my OC holster, so I can go into any restaurant - you know, that silly VA law that allows OC where alcohol is served, but forbids CC.
Of course, unlike many here, I do not consistently CC. Since I can never carry at work, I am not in the habit of carrying all the time.

No. The ranges that I shoot at specifically having rules against concealed carry when entering the range. They are private ranges.....so their place, their rules.

I read a story someone here posted on THR about a guy at an outdoor range wanting to "see" his gun, and then said "what would happen if I didn't give this back"

The guy then drew his CCW...and the thugs gave him his gun back and then left.

This really "inspired" me, because now when I'm at the outdoor ranges I always have a loaded gun on my hip regardless of what I'm currently shooting.

It depends on the range I'm at. Most of the ranges near me are indoor and have policies against concealed carry. I feel reasonably secure in the ROs at all but one of those ranges. Most are attentive and adequately staffed. So, I will usually just drop my carry rig in my range bag on the way in...sometimes I'll leave it on, mainly dependent on what I'm doing. If I'm going to be shooting from a bench I'll usually take it off. I'm tall enough to end up in some awkward positions when using most of the benches at the ranges near me and it doesn't play well with a concealed pistol.

One range is the exception. Their range officer doesn't pay attention when on duty and is often inside the lobby talking with others instead of doing his job. There have already been a few suicides on the range with rented guns and last year there was a hostage situation that lasted a few hours on the range.

So, I just try and stay away from that place all together.

I OC at the range... But i have my CC hoster on as well so i can practice if i am alone or with other shooters who arent the paranoid type.. Some people here get ancy actions when they see you hide a pistol away...

I OC at the range, but I'm also an RO and I'm required to be armed. We allow you to carry on our range, but we ask that you show your carry permit first. That simple request gives bangers up from the city fits.

We figure that people will want to practice drawing their CCW in a safe and controlled environment. That being said, it does not clear leather unless you are on the firing line, ready to shoot.

Both the ranges I have been to do not allow any loaded weapons when entering, CCW or no. Neither have range officers. I have a lead on a few good ranges from people on this board, so hopefully I will be checking them out in the coming weeks.

Yes - I would think it would be stupid not to. I don't know some of the other members even if they are showing ID.
You never know when something can happen.

Yes. My CCW stays concealed and is not fired during that range session.
Same here. When I shoot the piece that I usually carry, then I carry something else that day.

Same.

Hardtarget, I think you're referring to the infamous Miami FBI shootout, where the perps (Matix & Platt) killed a man target shooting and took his monte carlo.

Anyone seen Silverado? Last thing I want is to get lasso'ed and be stuck with an empty six shooter!

NRA HQ, where I shoot, just specifies that draw practice must be done from a strong-side belt holster. They don't want sweeping due to crossdraws. As far as having stuff out behind the line goes, their policy is that holstered = cased.

I'll generally plop my CC gun on the bench, and stuff another 9x18 in my holster for draw practice. Then, put the CC gun back in the holster while I'm still on the line.

At our little range here in Texas where we shoot 22 cal rimfire bench rest. One or more shooters always have CC on them. Seems the range lies across an established route for drug and illegals it being less than 3 miles from the Rio Grande River

Yes, I carry on my way to the indoor range, and fortunately, don't have to worry about unloading, etc before entering. I usually have a range bag with 2 or 3 other handguns, ammo, protection, etc. Those handguns are unloaded.

The range I go to also happens to be the place where I attended my HCP qualification class. They also have a nice shop as well. They have a sign on the door that states something to the affect of "All guns must either be unloaded or holstered". They are obviously HCP friendly.

They don't have any issues about unholstering your HCP gun on the range, then firing with it. I don't think they want you practicing your draw and fire techniques though.

On one recent trip to their shop, I found a gun friendly dress belt that I wanted to try on. I spoke to the person behind the counter. He said if I wanted to try it on with gun and holster, to simply put on my protection, go into the range, and clear my handgun. I did so, and tried on the belt with all of my gear, right there in the shop.

These guys have a great attitude.
