I'm wanting to purchase a light weight bolt action 223 for my mom, with fancy pants boolits I'm sure it could really put a hurtin on a hog in a pinch.
50 gr ttsx, 53 Barnes, 55 Barnes or gold dot, 60/62 partition/gold dot, 64 nosler solid base ppt(edited cuz autocorrect is out to get me), Lehigh anything, etc depending on the barrel twist if you can't find something that works, I'd be hard pressed to blame the cartridge. I KNOW the 50 barnes will run in a 12 twist and it's violent with no exceptions so far, liked the bc better than the others or gold dots and noslers woulda been up, loaded with benchmark, they're a hoot but far from a joke. Plenty of other bullets out there too, but without knowing if you'll go 12,9,8,7 twist, I'm starting ez.

Have you heard about IMI's 77gr MatchKings? I've heard they're real accurate a long way out if your barrel's twist is faster than 1:9. I haven't yet checked, out of curiosity, to see what GameKings are available since I pay more attention to Hornady. Also, what's legal in your area?

55 gr. V-Max or Ballistic Tip Varmint will turn their lungs to jelly, I will attest that it does so on coyotes and deer, don't know why it wouldn't on wolves, if needed. Actually I've got a 40 rounder of them in my AR pistol right now, the rioters in Mpls. have threatened to move down 94.
I don't want to derail this in any way but I truly wish you the best.
I like your suggestions for squishies, should you get a chance at some cheap gold dots, they do a healthier job mixing penetration with expansion, if barriers aren't an issue then I too would enjoy the vmax as a primary.

Concerning firearms transactions or hunting regulations ?

Sure! I wouldn’t disagree. However, my wolf hunting is limited to when I’m elk hunting. I WILL NOT ever use 223/556 for elk. So it’s out. Plus, we have Griz bopping around too. Again, a hard pass with that caliber.

I don’t hate it, but don’t love it either. I do like it for plinking. It’s easy to buy bulk components and load on my Dillon 650.

I am going to try hunting with a 300 BLK this year with supersonic loads. Only for deer though.

Hunting regulations regarding legal ammo. In my area, for deer in particular, expanding bullets are legal but non-expanding are not. (I've heard that the definition is a bullet that wasn't designed not to expand.) In other jurisdictions, they might allow a wider variety of bullets for lawful use on big game.

I am thinking of getting a bolt action rifle in this caliber so I have a common ammo pool with my AR.

Someone suggested that it is "immoral" (his words - not mine) to hunt deer with a .223/5.56. I am pondering the efficacy of that statement...

I know this has been beaten to death but I'll add my own experience using 223/5.56 on game. Over the course of around 15 years I have used 223/5.56 in both AR-15's and bolt rifles to take game ranging from in size from prairie dogs to whitetail deer and feral hogs.

For anything other that varmints, which tend to get shot with the 53 grain V-Max loaded in my home defense AR unless it's a planned hunt, I have recently I have been using the 62 gr Barnes TTSX but before that it was the 64 grain Winchester Power-Point. The biggest animal I've used either of those on was a 350ish lb hog at ~125 yards. Shot it in the neck, about two inches down and back from the ear, and it dropped like a stone. Longest shot on larger game was on an 180ish lb eight point at ~175 yards. Shot him right at base of the neck and again he immediately dropped.

I would think that some of the newer ammo, like the Barnes TSX and the Hornady GMX, along with the 75 grain Gold Dots, offer some improved options for hunting with a 223.

Yes, but if you would have told them you were using a .223 they would have just shrugged it off, possibly even glaring at you harshly.:)

Absolutely. Why if they would have know that I was using a "poodle shooter" on them they just might have tried to skewer me with their antlers.

The 62 gr Barnes TTSX does an amazing job on both deer and hogs. I have a 100 of the 70 grain TSX but haven't loaded them up yet because the 62 gr does such a good job. I can't imagine that they wouldn't do just as good of a job but since I haven't felt the need I haven't tried yet. Same with the GMX. I would like to get some of the Gold Dots to try but can never seem to find them in stock when I go to order supplies.
