During my seven years flying Alaska I had several mechanical problems that forced me to land and wait for help.
Only one occasion I had to spend a night in the helicopter.
Once, I did make a small lean-to to protect me from the wind.
I expected to be there longer, but my mechanic was able to hire a boat and guide from Noatak to come up river and fix my helicopter.
I was only down about six hours.
Surveying makes finding your position a lot easier.
Also, if possible, if we were forced down, we landed on a sandbar on a river.
That way, the rescue team just flew the river until we were found.
I considered trying to catch a fish with some of the gear in my survival knife, But I carried three days of food in my helicopter survival pack.
I wish now that I had tried it out.
