Ten years or so ago, there were a handful of very enjoyable live chat rooms where you could get together with other shooters, hunters, reloaders & collectors to swap interests & ideas & just visit about our shooting sports in general, while also learning from other's experiences . Yahoo's gun room was never one of the better live rooms, but at times it was better than nothing if all other rooms were vacant. About seven, eight years ago, the better live rooms for firearms seemed to go belly up. Yahoo's current live chat gun room is now absolutely worthless. I really miss the better live chat rooms we had . Is anyone aware of a worthwhile, live, firearm related chat room in existance today ? Thank You.

Fishing Texas Online and Hunting Texas Online both have chat rooms. The HTO forum has not worked as well as FTO.

I used to hang out on several IRC chatrooms. I did a quick google search, and the first hit I got was:

http://irc.netsplit.de/channels/?chat=guns+and+firearms

"Searched for 'guns and firearms'. 12,573 matching entries found."

I'm not familiar with any of them, but you sure have a choice from which to choose. I'll wager they go from the very mundane to the disgustingly extreme.

But there you go.

Well, let's get one started:

#gunowners on dalnet

If it flies, we'll need ops for the room to keep the peace. Pass it on to others that you know that might be interested. Maybe we can get something worthwhile going!

It's web accessible (no knowledge of irc or irc client required) and well monitored.

I have not been in a chat room (besides IM) in several years. Since forums have became mainstream and much easier to search and use, the chat room has lost its appeal to many.

I like that fact that in a forum, I can think about what I say... and even go back and edit what I said if I was an a-hole or something.

Well they're obsolete for very very good reason - chat rooms suck beyond all comprehensible belief. A forum such as this one accomplishes the exact same thing better, faster, and with 1/1,000000 the amount of confusion, noise, distraction, & extraneous discussion. What on earth would appeal to you about such a confused free-for-all, when you can get answers here just as fast, more accurately, and recorded/searchable? That's like saying, yes, I have a Mercedez and a Porsche, but I'm still looking for a Renault Le Car to drive around occasionally. I must admit I don't get it.

I avoid chat rooms. I used to have a few I'd go to that were firearm or car oriented, but all too often they would turn into flamefests or stay off topic.

I've found most forums to be much more civil and helpful.

I love chatrooms. But I find myself spending all day there, and it gets to me after a while. Now, I'm kinda regretful for uninstalling mIRC client. :(

Did this ever go anywhere?

Or is there a decent live chat elsewhere now?

(I resurrected this because it's on topic with what I'm looking at.)

Thank you,

Josh

It would be cool if THR had a live chatroom!
Not to be rude, but I'd put the odds somewhere between "not a chance in hades," and satan skating to work.

;)

The idea here being an online gun information resource, not so much a social club or hangout. Hence, no off-topic or "general interest" section.

And besides, to maintain the high standards and focus we require would necessitate full-time, round-the-clock monitoring and effort on a level that is at least an order of magnitude beyond what a handful of volunteer staffers could manage. (...or could stomach!)

Sam is right. A few years ago we had an off-topic forum called the Roundtable. I beleive its demise was because of the reasons he stated.

yep to hard to lock the thread when you told them they could talk about what they wish.
but back to the op. I think chat rooms have gone the way of cassette tapes. just old.

That'd be Satan skating at work ... But good one, though!

I tend to agree with those who've noted that chat rooms [stink] ... My local (let's just say Seattle area) forum has a chat feature; regrettably, other than planning events and going over last minute info, conversation pretty much degenerates down to a (let's just say) less than mature level of discourse.

A good forum shouldn't require a chat room. Just my opinion ...

Try cast boolits. They have their moments. Been there for awhile. It has its lows and Highs.
