Does a LEO know if you have a CCW for a routine traffic stop?

In Orygun it is linked to the vehicle reg,usually the officer is notified"RO holds a current CHL".I don't know if the DL is linked,but I assume it is.I just keep them together and hand them together.Usually,the response is"I don't need this one"... ;)

Here in CT I have a friend who is a police officer. I actually asked him thsi very question while he was in his cruiser and he told me that he can't pull it up on his in cruiser computer for a traffic stop but he can call in to the station and find out fairly quickly. He also can run seriel numbers on firearms by calling in to teh station as well to see if they are stolen or not.

Tn

In TN your HCP's # is the same as your drivers license, so they know when they stop you. Just don't seem right. Unclebriar!

Doug444,

Unless the law has changed recently, R724-4-13 states: When a concealed firearm permit holder or certificate of qualification holder is stopped for questioning by a peace officer based on reasonable suspicion in accordance with Section 77-7-15 and the holder has a concealed firearm in his/her possession, the holder shall immediately advise the peace officer that he/she is a lawful holder and has a concealed firearm in his/her possession.

(Emphasis mine)

Also note that substantially more than mere contact with an officer is required before it is required that you disclose that you are carrying.

question

Here in Colorado "SOME" sheriffs enter CCW holders in the NICS system

ok but do LE always run you thru ncis for traffic stops?

i know sometimes police only go as far as looking for local warrants, which never made much sense to me- can anyone expand on this?

In NC, yes. Plate number and your DL# are linked to your CCW.

Actually, it's only linked to the driver's license. A vehicle license check doesn't show CCW information.

;)

Been some years since I took the training course but remember the instructer here (Ky) told us best to tell the officer right at the start. Not sure if tied in here but probably is since the permit info has to go through the State Police and then back to the applicant who then takes it to the sherrif's office to actually get the permit. Faster here than some states but slower than others. Seems like about 3 weeks or then so but may be faster now. Also renewals very fast.

in NM...

When an Officer runs your DL#, there is a field in the report for a CHL#, but the data has appearantly not yet been entered. An aquaintance of mine with the Albuquerque PD ran my DL at my request just to see what would come up and the CHL # field was blank even though I've had my CHL for over a year.

NM has no obligation to notify, and unlicensed carry in a car is legal, Most LEOs will say that they prefer to be notified up front if you're carrying with or without a CHL.

‘Nother Cali CCW holder chiming in; definitively no- PD does not have access to that data during a traffic stop. When I was still in the firearms business I had a very large LEO clientele; San Jose PD, Santa Clara SOs, Santa Clara PD, Campbell PD etc and every single officer I ever asked said that they do not have access to that information from the cruisers.
And 50 Freak is correct, in Cali you do not need to inform the officer that you are carrying. In fact the SO FTO that ran me through my initial qual stated specifically that unless there was an overriding reason to do so, it’s best to NOT inform the officer- reasoning being that it would needlessly ramp up the stress level. A simple “yes sir, no sir, here’s CDL and proof of insurance” is just fine.

On the Florida DL there is a hologram on the front that signifies CCL holder. I'm sure its in the info strip on the back too. Joe

Is that a recent addition to the FL driver's licenses?

My renewal DL was issued in 08/03 and has four holograms consisting of, two of the outline of the state itself as it would appear on a map and two which read "florida" on the front of the DL.

I had a LE friend that I used to ride with (motorcycles) a few years ago run me and nothing came up. He said that a special query had to be ran to determine CCL status.

You know that's illegal, running you for the heck of it, right?

Orange County should be yellow; requires hoops to jump through but can be done.

The OCSD requires you inform an officer if you are stopped for any reason.

Law Enforcement Traffic Stop & CCW

In a number of jurisdictions (not all, by any means) the driver's license, plate number and/or CCW may be cross-linked for easy access by street cops for officer safety. I've never had a 'problem' when involved in any sort of encounter with law enforcement while carrying.

Suggested Protocol:

* Pull safely off the highway, giving the officer room to move around and not get hit by a passing motorist;
* If possible, have registration, proof of insurance, license and CCW permit in easy reach. (I usually pass all that over right away).
* When the officer approaches, keep your hands ON THE WHEEL at 10 and 2 o'clock;
* Be polite, be nice and be positive. "Good Evening officer, I'm a CCW permit holder and my permit is located next to my driver's license. My sidearm is in its holster and is on my right hip. How do you want to handle it from here?"

Just go with the flow. Remember, you're a law-abiding citizen and you want to assure the officer by your actions and demeanor that he or she has nothing to fear from you. My own experience is that being respectful and being straightforward about my status has resulted in positive experiences.

In 2 cases, the LEO that I dealt with exchanged views with me on our respective sidearms, making comparisons and talking about defensive shooting organizations like IDPA and IPSC. Pretty cool. In 1 case the officer took my firearm, placed it on the hood while he did his business, then after confirming my CCW status and identity, politely returned it to me and sent me on my way with no ticket at all, just a warning to watch my speed.
