does anyone actually dislike the AR15?

There's really not a gun that I truly hate...only those that absolutely bore me to tears. Here's a list of those guns -

AR-15

When I've run out of guns to buy, then I'll buy an AR-15. But I doubt I'll ever run out of guns to buy. :D

i like the VZ58s as well, people always assume theyre an AK variant but dont realize they have next to nothing in common, the czech tend to make really nice rifles... ive chosen their CZ-805 to be my new age choice when they decide to release it to civilians

and the valmet is nice as well, they seem like they can be freefloated fairly easily too

VZ-58... what happens when an AK and an SKS move to czech republic and have babies

My current favorite is the VZ-58 as one of the most accurate .30 caliber AK-style platforms...rivaling the Valmet family
What size groups are you getting considering one but would like to know group size:D

AK-style? How so?
They look like many AKs and are often mistaken for an AK. Most folks hardly notice the different magazine shape, the safety or the open top receiver.

The only thing they really share is the cartridge.

ive been thinking of getting a saiga .308, converting into a conventional AK style rifle and having it chambered for something with a smaller bullet (better accuracy, less felt recoil)

I can't say that I dislike it. Just not my preferred choice. my 5.56 and 300BLK are great plinkers and my 6.8 is more useful.
Although I am married to a Russian that don't like guns, the Russian made rifles are my gun of choice.

I own one, but more on principle than anything else. I can't hunt with a semi-auto in PA, and even at the range I prefer my bolt actions. I really prefer a few, well measured shots to sending a lot of lead down range quickly.

What you are describing is how I felt about 1911s. Heard "every shooter should have one." Bought one, shot it ... didn't float my boat. Sold it. No regrets.

AR's are not for me, but I really like how they have stimulated interest in shooting in a way that traditional bolt guns have not. I doubt I'll ever have one myself, but I'm still a big fan.

Don't have one but I can say it is the only rifle I have ever cut down a tree (read small tree) with.

It is great for what it is but I'll stick to bolts and levers.

I dislike the AR-15. I qualified with an M-16A1 in 1984, and hated it. I am one of the vz-58 people, and I think this is the best of both worlds,

I am no rifleman, but here's some examples of what I've gotten so far,

Both 100 yards, iron sights, before I discovered I was loading too light. I will post more targets as I get some in - I've spent way too much time shooting the steel target at 100-200 yards, and THAT'S fun.

oooh ooh, pick me! pick me! I don't like the AR15. I know they can be reconfigured in almost any way you want, many of those resolve some of my issues with the gun, and i know they are accurate, and I have been though a few iterations with mine, but I just don't like the blasted thing. I'm a lefty and that poses some issues, (though work through-able) I hate the sproing, I hate how the thing is so blasted tall t doesn't fit into my gun safe well, the stock furniture has poor ergonomics, the stock trigger is garbage (IMHO, if you like it, more power to you) the action is too low, I'm not sold on 223, and they are LOUD. Seems like everybody at the range has one, and those 16" barrels with birdcages are just deafening. Which brings us to my final complaint, they don't even suppress particularly well with the DI gas system. (not in terms of noise reduction, but in blowback and grit in my left handed face. And the sproing remains)

I do like sniper66's point about increasing interest in guns though. I feel that way about harry potter: the books weren't all that good, but anything to get kids to read.........

why did you have to go and show that photo?.. now i want a VZ-58

Sorry Jason, and the worst thing is - that version isn't QUITE available yet...;) It will be soon, and 5.56mm vz-58 PISTOLS will be coming in soon, too. :)

The AR-15 is the grown man's Lego toy, but I just can't get used to it. I did have one AR guy ask if I could manipulate all controls with one hand, and yes, the only thing I can't do with the 5.56mm vz-58 is release the bolt - the extended bolt release doesn't fit with the AR-15 magazine adapter. The 7.62x39mm version with the NEA Extended Bolt Release and Ambi Mag Release does allow me to access all controls from the firing hand.

Gotta be worth something that the original vz-58 is the longest serving assault rifle so far. ;)

Edit to add, vz-58 pistols ARE in stock. :)

I have only fired around 50 rounds through an AR-15, but I can tell straight away I don't like the "sproing" in my ear.

Then install a Spikes ST-T2 buffer, and a lot of that sound will go away.

I love the mechanics of the AR. I really like the fact that i can do everything including replacing barrels without need of a machine shop.

OTOH, I dislike the ergonomics of it for field use (mag well sits at the natural carry point, straight stock does not shoulder properly for instinctive shooting) and find that I'm faster on the first shot (lead on target, offhand) using a well-fitted traditional sporting long gun.

Don't remember exactly the date but it was close to 69-70 when I swore I would never never own or even touch another one. Had to keep a spay can of silicone lube just to keep it running. Fast forward to 2011 and I broke down and dropped the cash for a new Bushmaster with 20" barrel. To date I have only had one issue and that was my fault, tried using the cheap cheap Russian Tula Ammo. I do have a Rossi single shot .223 that is mitigated for those cheap rounds. I guess I had a lot of preconceived thoughts and ideas from incidents that happened when the M-16 was first used in combat. I still don't like the size of round if I had to be in a fight for my life but it gets the job done.

The ar is a great platform but not infallible.
After 11 years in service I have realized this. Its simple to use and you can train some one who has never fired a firearm to consistently hit targets at 100 m in less than a week of instruction. It is cheap to build and will take a beating and is easy to repair. That being said there are much better rifle designs that don't require as much maintenance but cost more and are much more difficult for your average highschool grad to dissamble. I don't like the platform but I respect it.

It is not that I dislike the AR15; I prefer other weapons for the general utility carbine role. Presently, that is the Mini-14, as I prefer its ergonomics, and it is accurate enough for general utility. My wife liked my BCM lightweight middy, so it is now hers. If I feel the need for a precision, longer-range auto-loading small-bore rifle, well, then, an AR15 will fill that need well for me. I may well acquire one in the future, when I have more time to punch holes in paper.

FWIW, in happier times, I owned an M1 Garand. I hope to do so again, and/or acquire an M-14 or M1A. A .308 AR is unlikey to be in my future. No hate is involved; just preference.
