This is something I'm curious about because I'm someone who has never purchased a firearm new from a dealer. It's always been purchased from a private party. My reason is that I fear all the record keeping and background checks will be abused, either now or sometime in the future. I know that the ATF is supposed to destroy all records after a short time, but I've also seen reports that they don't. Also that they eventually get all the records from the dealers.

To avoid all this, I've always bought my guns from people that are advertising them in the newspaper, etc. I was just curious as to whether anyone else here does this.

I never have. Never really thought about it before. Not to say I wouldn't, but I have found everything I've wanted either used or at least pre-owned. I have bought used from a dealer -- same paperwork.

FBI NICS check - if approved, destroy after 24 hours. (Do you believe they
are?)

Dealer records - keep for 20 years (have you reminded your dealer
to destroy his old 4473's and bound books?)

Out-of-business Dealer records sent to BATF - agency keeps forever,
enters in computer by serial number (not name), uses for
traces.

Most people don't hold the same FFL for more than 20 years. Thus,
ALL gun sale, repair, and pawn records eventually wind up in BATF's storage and in the gun registration data base. BATF claims it isn't really "registration" because the data base can only be accessed by serial number (i.e., they must have the gun) not by name.

There's a lot more potential abuse of record-keeping that I fear than from government records of my firearms purchases.

Do you have a Social Security Account Number?
Do you have any bank accounts?
Ever served in the military?
Direct deposit of your paycheck? Bank account debit card?
A state-issued driver's license?
How about credit cards?
Registered a motor vehicle or boat?
Bought your own home?
Pay rent?
Enrolled your children in public schools?
Do you have a "Preferred Shopper," "Safeway Club," or other grocery or retail store "rewards" card?
Do you have a cellular telephone?
Cable television?
An internet service provider?
Do you have a traditional telephone in your home?
Do you ever fly on commerical airlines, domestic travel or overseas?

Yeah, perhaps one day the government will attempt to get those firearms you filled out a 4473 on ... But hey, if anyone wants to find you, track you, learn everything there is to know about you ... Trying to explain how you "lost," "had stolen," or "traded off/sold to private parties and didn't keep records" ... there are probably much larger issues out there than your guns ...

And yes, I buy new guns from licensed dealers, too.

The Old Dog makes a valid point: The Man has his nose so far up your *** that he doesn't need those 4473's...he has plenty of ways to find out what you got and where you got it from and where you got it hid.

Ever buy ammo online? Ever buy ammo with a credit card? Companies have a duty to protect the personal info of their customers, but given a choice between handing your life over to Uncle Sam and being put out of business, they'll sell you down the river in a heartbeat.

Not now, but in that (hopefully) far,far in the future US of confiscation at gunpoint, it can and WILL happen.

Well, of course. The govt. would not lie to us, WOULD THEY?:what:

Very seldom but not because I'm afraid of any paperwork. I also don't have any problems with having transfers done either. It's very, very few new guns on the market that I want. If you are afraid of a federal or state form then think of all those times you wrote your SSN then signed your name.

There's no need to worry. Our government is full of honest, hard-working, intelligent, and honorable people who were elected fairly by We the People, and are working in our best interests. They would never do anything to compromise our freedom or rights as citizens of the free world. If by some chance a corrupt person takes an office, the checks and balances set by our constitution will make certain that they cannot conspire and act in their own best interests... cough, cough.. *gag*

Sorry, I was choking on all the bull :cuss: that just came up my throat :barf:

The way I see it, I get what I need wherever I can. Where I live there isnt that much flow in the market of used guns that I am aware of, so I do buy my guns new from time to time. If the government tries to take them away from me in any shape or form, using records or not, then they can go ahead and try.

Come and get them, I say.

Majic, got to agree with you on that. Have you noticed that many of the newer idiot proof autos and also some of the rather weird looking revolvers of today with the odd configurations and colors kind of resemble some of the weapons favored by Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers and other early SCI-FI heroes. Hell, they don't even look like proper guns.:D

In 40 years, with something like 500 guns purchased, I think 29 or 30 were brand new. Probably about 80% of all the guns I bought were purchased from FFL dealers. Maybe 10 of those new guns were ones my wife went and bought for me as Christmas or BD presents.

My reason is that I fear all the record keeping and background checks will be abused, either now or sometime in the future.

Hmmm...it's a good thing you're only sharing this with us close friends.
Honestly, if it comes to that...they will find you and them.

I've bought about a dozen new over the years out of at least 150 firearms. Mind, I mean *brand new.* I've bought a lot of firearms that were essentially NIB and had the same profit margin for the dealer, if not a little more. But as far as fresh from the wholesaler firearms, it's rare. Most of the firearms at the local shops aren't new. The only ones with 100% new stock are the chains like Sportsman's Wh**ehouse.

I buy both ways, but after twenty years of not buying any guns, I recently started upgrading my collection and started buying them again.

Question:

When I bought one from a dealer at a gun show recently (first time in 20 years), the dealer brought a copy of "something" to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) table which contained the make, model, and serial number of the firearm I was purchasing. And I presume the folks at the CBI table recorded this info on their laptop when they entered the request for clearance.

Why should this have to be provided for the state criminal background check?

Why does the CBI need this info?

Seems to me one should be approved or denied based on one's background check, and not what the make, model, and serial number is. You should be approved for "a firearm," and that should be that, in my opinion.

Was this a check for whether or not the gun was stolen? I thought the dealer had to do a stolen gun check when the gun was transferred to him/her, so what's up?

Or was the seller merely a private party, and I only thought he was an actual FFL?

Appreciate any insight on this, since, essentially, I am "new" at buying guns again after a twenty year hiatus.

I am moving more toward used guns but for a different reason.
Most of the new guns I buy are defective. I have never been screwed buying a used gun from a member in good standing of any board I belong to though.
So I have started looking for used guns online when I want something.

Mine are all on the books at the moment, unfortunately. One I bought used, but it was from out of state & shipped to FFL. Plus, I had to get a purchase permit & have it "safety inspected" (i.e. registered) at the local PD. Another I filled out a 4473 on when I bought it new.

I haven't found many used firearms I'd wanna buy in the area. I do want to find some so I can have a few FTF sales that are off the books to prevent Katrina-like gunpoint confiscations.

I'd LOVE it if I could buy most of my guns used. The last three guns I purchased were not the kind you could easily find used. My dealer called all over the place to find a 28ga Browning BPS, none of the online auctions were selling any. Before that I bought an SKB Over/Under shotgun, one of their new models. I called over fifteen gun stores and found ONE, it was a good deal though. I got a CZ527 .223, that one could have been the easiest to buy new, but I had the cash at the time and couldn't pass it up.

USED BUT NOT ABUSED GUNS

Fella's (and/or Ladies)

I kind'a like buying used guns, to a certain extent~! Since the fall of '04
I have been able too buy used* guns at wholesale prices, plus the fact
that used guns (in most instances) are not only a good value; but have
been test driven, or broken in. And lastly, I only buy quality pieces- NO
JUNK GUNS for me, please~! Thank You very much. :scrutiny: ;) :D

*FootNote- if not for this fact, I would not have been able to
afford what I have accumulated~!

In some states, like Michigan, there is no such thing as a "no paper trail" pistol as all have to be registered.

etc. etc.

YOU BET!!!!

You (and Me) are on the list already, no dought about it. There are just too many paper and computer trails for the Gov to follow.:)

Don't sweat it. If the Gov comes for us it is all over anyway. Now, if there are riots, or attacks from without, that is another story and many are prepared to hold their own and not worry if big brother is going to come around and "protect" us.

I rarely buy new, only because I like old style firearms, and save a bunch of money buying used, I don't buy new cars either. The last new firearm I bought was my Contender 10-12 years ago.

I think I need a definition of what you mean by "new". If you mean "from a dealer, never sold before (better known as "NIB"), I've bought exactly one in over 50 years of collecting/accumulating. If you mean not from a dealer, it can't be NIB but rather ANIB (because it has been sold at least once). I have picked up very few of these as my interests run to vintage guns and 100% ANIB vintage guns are hard to find (and afford :p )
