Does anyone here NEVER buy new guns?

My biggest defining factors are...

is it cool, or something I want

is it a screaming deal....(any fool can pay list price)

Nearly all my guns are pre-owned. Let the first guy take the beating. I've gotten quite a few unfired guns at below wholesale prices

Used guns/New guns

It used to be about half and half until the onset of milsurpitus. 5 of the last 6 were definitely "used". I've bought from FFL's and private parties If anything I would might jump on something from a private party quicker than otherwise because there isn't any paper work or paper trail.
But, having said that, like a previous poster said - between government and private enterprise, there is very little that cannot be discovered about you if you have ever used a credit card.
Now, having said that ... as a programmer specializing in data access and presentation since forever (since VSAM was the way you accessed data) ... it would require a great deal of time, effort and motivation to tie all that data together to the extent that someone could use it to catalog my particular inventory. Not that it cannot be done but the cost in time and effort would be monumental.

And the dot-gov has monumental resources.

Like the man said, "If it's time to bury them, it's time to dig them up."

Then again, you just posted on an internet bulletin board your plan. When you did that, your ISP was logged. From your ISP, it's not a hard thing for "The Man" to track that back to you. So you're really in the same boat as the rest of us.

That said.. I think it's a good thing that "The Man" knows there's a lot of people out there with guns that won't take kindly to them being taken away. :)

As to the oringal question.. some of both. I think the "collector" guns are better used (they have some history to 'em) but at least in my admittedly limited experience new ones shot straighter and were at least sometimes better for using.

iv never bought a new gun. not that im opposed to them but i like milsurps. and used guns just seem like a better deal compared to what justseems like a rip off.

Monumental resources

Yes, the .gov has monumental resources - but to large extent - the resources are like the Post Office or the DMV. That level of motivation and efficiency.

There was a post recently about a plausible scenario of the government eventually outlawing and confiscating all privately held firearms. Perhaps the government could sift through all available 4473's. Since this happens incrementally, they track down owners of "bad" guns first, but later get to those with sporting guns (evil long range sniper). And sure, they could start sifting through Walmarts credit and debit card records to see who was buying what ammo, and all the public ranges to see who came to shoot, interview "known former gun owners" for who else they knew of.

Plausible maybe, but involving years of effort probably crossing more than one election cycle, enormous computing power that the government seldom seems able to manage well, a bureauracracy of thousands of efficient and motivated workers. That's my point.

I prefer a private transfer, but if an FFL has something I like I don't hesitate to do the paperwork. If I have cash for ammo I use that but I'll whip out the debit card if I don't.

If/when Uncle Sam decides to take our goodies away from us the plan and intent will have been leaked in DC long beforehand. Besides, who thinks the government could really rake in even 60% of the firearms owned by people who filled out 4473s to get them? Is the government really that efficient?

Just did a little "inventory check" - 18% of my guns were bought new. Been awhile, though. The last 18 were "pre-owned", but my streak will end soon - I have a new 9mm semi-auto on order for my wife. (Hey, since it will be her gun, do I have to put it in the "guns I bought" count?)

I'm in my 60's. I hain't about to wait around for a gun I want to come available as 'used'. If I want it and can afford it, it's coming home now!:)

First of all, I never buy new, the quality is just not there anymore. I have bought one new one, a Winchester M9410 for the simple reason the climate was such as I was afraid I would miss that one. btw, there are some quality problems with wood to metal fit. Other than that it is a pretty nice gun with a heavy trigger pull...no crossbolt safety.

I get any new aquisitions from the pawnshop my son-in-law works at. He got me a Colt King Cobra for 300 dollars, for instance.:neener:

Something most people don't realize about the 4474, you do not have to give your social security number. I never do because it is not required.

If you are fortunate enough to buy all yours from private parties, more power to you. You have one big weight off your shoulders. For the rest of us, me for example, I get mine where I find them, often at smaller gun shops. I just don't dwell too much on all that paperwork floating around. There are a couple stores where, should there be a move to round up 4473s, there will likely be tragic fires.

FBI NICS check - if approved, destroy after 24 hours. (Do you believe they are?)

Don't think they are. Recently transferred 3 firearms through the same dealer, spaced a few months apart. Last one the dealer told me the NICS people wanted him to fax all my documents over, because they know I've bought 3 firearms. I'm not a citizen, so I always get delayed, but this last one there was extra scrutiny.
