Does anyone here shoot guns to bring in the new year?

Do you shoot on New Years Eve?

not if you mean up into the air

"know your target and what's behind it" ...i'm certain i've read that somewhere

Yes! I spent all afternoon at the range, now I'm home and safe from the drunks.

If you mean at midnight, no.

If you mean on New Year's Eve day or New Year's Day, sure. At the range.

Yes I meant at the range, not mexican hat dance old west style .... just to clarify.....

Our family likes to go to the range every year for new years eve.

I went to the range for a couple of hours this afternoon in the drizzling rain and chrono'd some new 44 mag reloads. Had the place all to myself.
A great stress reliever.:)

In north miami there have been guns and homemade bombs going off all night. I just had someone unload a 15 round mag of 9mm no more than 500 yards from my house. We had a homemade bomb set off all the car alarms and rattle the windows a half hour ago. It's a total free for all. We just stay in. Happy new year!

Went cross-country skiing today. Snow started dumping, wind started blowing harder. Guns stay inside, where it's dry, unless there's a reason.:)

(I already spent a while drying out a nice walnut/blue shotgun that got dumped in the snow a few times on the 30th while I was out hunting.)

Used to, a long time ago when I lived in the country. 16 gauge muzzleloading pistol blanks. Neighbors once thought I had dynamite (they were impressed, not scared)

Real ammo? No.

Not me. I love shooting, but it's the same every new year. We go to the same friends' house for a little party. Nothing crazy, just about 20 or so friends hanging out, having a good time. I'm pretty boring these days.

If you are going to shoot 'up' in the Air...just make sure it is Straight Up...and never at any angle less than that.

Uhhhh...and maybe wear a Hard Hat...

If you feel a 'Doink' on the Hard Hat, you get a perfect score.

I would have, if I wasn't on the military base at that moment. I would have pointed it straight up in the air and shot all 6 from the revolver. What's wrong with that? I live in the county and safe discharge of firearms is allowed. Of course it would have been a cap and ball revolver with a #11 cap setting off 30 grains of Pyrodex P FFFG with a good stiff wad of toilet paper packed over the powder. :D

But, alas, we can't exercise our second amendment rights when in the military on base.

Well you COULD... but a court martial sucks :)

Off topic: You a SWO, Bubblehead, Fly Boy, or Specialty Officer?

I remember I heard a few shots in the back woods area of Norfolk Naval Base on new years of 2001->2002, I don't think they ever caught who it was... I was on quarterdeck watch at the time :)

Not just no but hell no. I also make it a point to say, "***" to everyone the next day that says they shot their guns on New Year's Eve.

Yep.. because stepping, completely sober, into the back yard range at 11:59, and shooting aimed fire at proper targets requires a ***...

You're so right, I guess I must face the error of my ways!!!

no i do not. i live where it is to dangerous. plus, the crazy lady living next door would probably call the cops thinking i was trying to shoot her. but, i would love to own an 8" cannon (shoot just a wad) for just such an occasion!

I will shoot, because it is a day off. The last occasion I shot a gun for was the last presidential election. I left the polling booth and went to the range.

Shooting into the air is irresponsible.

Yes....and no. It may be irresponsible, but it's not really dangerous if done straight up in the air. This is covered in "Hatcher's Notebook", where he investigated for the War Department if soldiers could be wounded by military ammo shot straight up. The conclusion was that it would not wound someone.

What probably is dangerous is firing wildly at some lower angle. Of course, guns and alcohol don't do good together. And firing guns in crowded areas is irresponsible.

Where we live, there are only 3 close by neighbors and they are all a half mile away. But no alcohol last night and the gun stayed on my hip.
