As far as storing firearms. What are the legalities of these situations?

1. Hunter lives and maintains primary residence in State A but also owns a cabin and land in State B. ....Hunter leaves a couple of rifles in a safe in the cabin in State B when Hunter goes back home to State A.

Legal or not?

2. Mr and Mrs Smith live and maintains primary residence in State C. But they also own a condo near the beach in State D. Mr Smith leaves his pistol with Mrs Smith for protection in State D when Mr.Smith has to go back to State C for some personal business.

Legal or Not?

3. Or Mr. and Mrs. Smith leave a pistol in their wall safe in State D when they go back home to State C.

Legal or Not?

I didn't mean to muddy the waters here, just curious how would cases like these apply? It would not be far fetched if someone decided to leave some firearms in another state on property where they hunt several times a year.

Not necessarily.

For example, the language of the statutes we've been discussing is really pretty clear as applied to the subject matter of the discussion. But folks tend to be unhappy with the result and look for reasons why the statutes really don't say what they say.

The situations you described did not involve transferring possession of a gun to someone else who is a resident of a State not the State of residence of the transfer. That is not the sort of situation under discussion.

To be clear, in my particular scenario, my friend is driving over for a visit anyway but may need to be away from his primary residence hence the need for a trusted person to store his firearm. But knowing how this trusted person has a penchant for acquiring such trinkets is how this discussion of whether or not possession may take place. I'm more than willing to store it untouched in a locked case. Just wasn't sure of the legal grounds of taking possession for an out of state person as I hadn't encountered this situation before. Not trying to avoid courier fees or FFL hassle at all. I've a friend that has an FFL that can formalize the transaction if need be. It's just a matter of arranging the logistics of it.

Thanks for the lively discussion.
