Hi. I've been looking at the single-shot shotguns on the NEF website. In the descriptions, it lists the Topper models as having "automatic shell ejection". It doesn't mention that feature in the descriptions of the Pardner models.

Can anyone here confirm whether or not the Pardner models also have this feature? Specifically the Pardner Youth 20ga.

Also, I was wondering if it is ok to dry-fire these single-shot shotguns?

Lastly, what kind of finish is that on the receiver of the Pardner Youth model. It's kind of an uneven finish.

Thanks. :)

Yes it does. all NEF & H&R (same co.) have ejectors to the best of my knowledge. All the ones I bought for grandsons were youth models amd have ejectors. Have been excellent shotguns, rimfires and centerfires for them.

Now I'll finish my post. You got to forgive me I'm old. Receivers on all of the new ones are blue, hardwood stocks, laminated stocks and plastic stocks on the group of them. I have 3 personal ones, 2 shotguns, one hardwood, one laminated. My heavy barrel .223 has a laminated one also.

Popplecop,

Thank you for your reply.

Regarding the finish...here is a link to a pic of the Pardner Youth. Note the uneven, almost zebra-like finish on the receiver. What is that?

It looks like colorcase harding. I think it is applied by oiling and then heating the part with usually chunks of bone. I could be wrong on the exact process. It makes a rainbow oily effect if done right. Guns of the old west had this finish often.

Case hardening hardens the outside metal on a weapon while leaving the inside more ductile. Old West guns frequently had cased parts like frames.

Usually the parts are heated to glowing hot with carbon from bones contacting the metal. This converts surface molecules of iron and iron alloys into steel. Wear is slowed and a bit of corrosion resistance is imparted.

I dry fire both of mine (an H&R .410 youth and a full size 12 gauge Pardner) and haven't broken anything yet. If you are worried about that, why not just buy a couple snap caps and then have the peace of mind of knowing that you aren't harming anything.
