Double Star AR's: opinions or experience?

I have looked into the same thing.
Everything I have seached on, in various forums indicates its a quality brand.
Not as common or popular as some but good to go.

I've had my DS for about a year. I'm no AR expert, but it fits my purposes exquisitely: inexpensive, entry-level rifle with a good company record (albeit not as popular as others), very good accuracy (last time I shot @ 50 yards, with irons, I was shooting baseball-size and under groups. I don't mean three or five shot groups; I mean shooting a mag full.) As far as I know, everything on the DS is mil spec, so if I want to upgrade parts, someday, I can.

I ordered two weeks after the election last fall and got it about a week before Christmas. I've not shot it extensively (ammo!) but the shooting I've done has been very enjoyable. I cannot tell you about extensive shooting tests, but I hope to remedy that in 2010.

I ordered this one, but from Centerfire Systems: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/36_753/products_id/411537958 FYI, this says .223; my upper and lower are both marked 5.56.

edit: CF's price is $100 more than I paid last year. Buds is right at the price I paid 12 months ago.

I have J&T components, which is the parts arm of the Doublestar company. My varmint AR upper and M4-gery upper are both J&T. Both have been reliable and show good workmanship. The varmint upper is accurate (<MOA) with my handloads. Good price too.

One of my AR's (two actually) are built on Doublestar lowers.

They both run fine and look good. The color is very black.

Double star make lowers and parts for tons of companies. They are great guns and there's not a company that makes better parts or lowers. I don't know of any match guns made by double star because they generally make parts for other companies and gun for law enforcement, but the standard style a2 and m4 s style guns are as good as any made.

If you get DoubleStar's PRINT catalog, there are some additional rifles in it, including Service Rifle competition guns (the kind that are free-floated but look externally like a standard M16A2 or A4).

Doublestar makes great 1911s as well. One really great thing about them is that their guns are made and serviced right here in the USA, right down the road from me in Winchester, Kentucky.

That was a factor for me when buying lowers.
It's nice to see Winchester, Kentucky stamped on there.

whats the difference between the one you linked to and this one?

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/p...s_id/411537957

The one you linked to has the barrel cut for a grenade launcher. Fromhttp://www.star15.com/rifles.html:
This lightweight, mil-spec, semi-automatic M-4 style rifle is optimized for high performance, and is specially designed to receive the M-203 grenade launcher. Features a 16” chromemoly steel, 1x9 twist barrel with a tactical muzzle-brake permanently attached, and a precision machine cut M-203 mounting groove. Also comes with genuine Colt® M-4 handguards and a fixed position M-4 buttstock to make this a complete M-4 style weapon. If you are looking for a true M-4 solution, then this is probably one of the best you will find.

The one I linked to is the standard carbine. Again, from their website:
[Carbine edition] This is the lighter weight semi-automatic Carbine version. Don’t let the smaller size fool you, this carbine is a tack driving powerhouse.Only mil-spec parts are used in the construction of this fine carbine. All parts are anodized, parkerised or black oxided for maximum durability.

I was in Bud's yesterday and actually had my hands on a few of the Doublestar guns they have in stock. They had a light barrel carbine with absolutly no options for just under $700 if bought across the counter. I have no idea about the website. I personally own a Star 15 carbine with a chrome lined heavy barrel and a3 upper. Its quality is just as good as any Bushmaster or DPMS I have held/fired.

That was a factor for me when buying lowers.
It's nice to see Winchester, Kentucky stamped on there.
Thats why I chose them over other brands.

Doublestar aren't that great.

Really? I would like to hear your reasoning for this statement.

I own a doublestar in 6.5 grendel. I have owned DMPS, RRA, Bushmaster, and double star. I would put the double star above the dpms and bushmaster in quality. About on par with the RRA but I like the tighter fit of the RRA. Doublestar is an awesome rifle.

Longdayjake,

No chrome lining
No MP testing
Non Shot peened bolts,
Badly staked Gas key
No staking at all on the RE
1/9 instead of 17 barrel twist
Standard instead of H buffer on the carbines.

I am sure there are more but that is all I can think of off the top of my head and I don't feel like going to their web site right now.

They claim to make a firearm using milspec parts and except the stripped lower and upper I can't find one Milspec part on the guns.

Don't get me wrong. They are a bunch of great guys, and I have used some of their stripped lowers, but for the money you are going to spend on a DS you can get a LOT better gun. Heck you can build a BCM carbine or Mid-length for what they charge and still have money left over for ammo.

Azizza missed a few:
4140 barrel steel instead of 4150CMV
6061 receiver extension instead of 7075T6
8620 bolt instead of 158 Carpenter
no M4 feed ramps

And the receivers are so black because they use a teflon finish instead of a mil-spec finish.

The gas key on mine is staked fine. The barrel twist is per your order. So is chrome lining, and so are feed ramps. Can't comment on some other things, since I have a 20" rifle and I built out the lower myself, but the stripped lower as well as the complete upper come from them.

My lower isn't teflon finished, but I prefer the one I have that is. So if DS has started teflon-coating their receivers, that's a good thing in my book.

I'm not saying someone shouldn't buy any other rifle, of course.

Depends on what your definition of 'good' is. If you want something reliable and shoots well, Double Star will work. If you want to impress people wearing Colt Tactical Panties™, you'll be disappointed.

So basically if it isn't a colt then its crap.

The gas keys are staked just fine.
1/9 twist is better unless you are going to shoot 75+ grain bullets or ap tracers.
You can get them with chrome lining.

Mil Spec is so over rated. Swat teams get by using non mil spec stuff and they shoot a TON more than most folks. Also, Mil spec isn't exactly known for high accuracy. No one has ever PROVEN that mil spec is better. Especially when you ask 500 people what "better" means. Just because it isn't mil spec doesn't mean that its not great.
