DPMS AR-10 Questions

The DPMS LR-308 is a good value in the $800-1100 range where it has no .308 AR competition. I have an LR-308B and for the money it's good. I don't know if I would buy one again. Once you pass $1200-1400 there are better options, although the really good stuff (LMT, SR-25, etc.) is far higher.

I have the DPMS 'Sportical' (read: econo version, no quad rail, sights, or carry handle) 308 and, aside from having uncontrolled full auto bursts upon first hitting the range (no joke, and it was NOT funny at the time...) that was remedied in a prompt and professional fashion by DPMS, I have no complaints on the gun. It will hold about 1.5MOA generally, with a 1-4X Leupold scope mounted.

The DPMS makes a very nice entry level rifle that can be upgraded as wanted. ArmaLite is just a little more money and a much better rifle, 7075 forged receiver vs 6061 extruded on the DPMS. Remember that the 7.62 AR platform does not have the interchangeability that the AR15 does. They are all pretty much propitiatory, very few parts interchange between manufacturers.

I went Noveske/ArmaLite and could not be more pleased.

What sort of optic do you think works best?

I want an optic that would fit in "scout" position, and be both good for quick target acquisition, but give me some amount of magnification. And, I'd prefer some sort of reticle, or sighting option that gives me .308 specific aimpoints for known ranges.

I know that might be a tall order... but, just wondering if such an animal exists?

Very long eye relief and magnification together are hard. The exit pupil on the scope is small with magnification, and that means your eye has to be in line with the eyepiece, and closer is faster in that case.

A red dot can be mounted in the scout position, no magnification, but is very fast. A typical scope is a 1-4x variable. Low end is typically Millett or Vortex Viper ($300-400), and mid/high end are SWFA, IOR, Meopta, Vortex Razor ($800-1000). Burris is in there also.

I have a 20" quad railed DPMS LR-308, and it runs great. However, the stock trigger is rough and I just replaced with a JP which is awesome.

Also - Armalite is the only maker of the "AR-10", and they have the lawyers to prove it.

I think a 2-10 or 3-12 type scope might be well suited. I had a 6-24 on mine it was too powerful. I just mounted a 2.5-10 on it now and I will see how it goes.

I started my adventure with a stripped lower LR-308 purchased at a gun show. Spent $3,200 when I was all done. The upper, lower, and quad rail are dpms. Barrel, gas tube, buffer spring, buffer and gas block were from Fulton Armory. Trigger is an SR-10 from american trigger and the butt stock is a magpul PRS. For the scope I went with Millett TRS-1. Scope mounts were ARMS quick release 30 mm.
