Driving 1500 miles and 5-states; strategy to find ammo?

? Waveski: I can’t remember anything from the Kung tv show except Glass-Hopper.

Maybe there is a slight connection between Kung Fu and the twice-weekly Krav Maga classes I began at age 64 ?

Just tangentially related, but back in the day, when I drove from the Florida Panhandle to California several times a year, I'd pull over to stretch my legs and walk around a K-Mart or Target. Just for the hell of it, before I'd leave, I'd seek out the manager and innocently ask where their ammo was.

Target carried ammo?

K-Mart back then was like Wally World, guns, ammo and the whole shebang; didn't know that about Target.

All the pawn shops in my area a the ones in the Walmart lines at daylight hording kt up, then putting it on their shelves at double the price!

Yuma, huh?

$12.89 a box for Wolf? Actually, the $16.88 for the WWB 5.56 is better than most on-line sellers are asking. As for the MagTech 9mm, at least they're still making ammo in the P.I.

How were the hat prices (can't see the tags)?

What I've seen around here is stuff is starting to come back and some retailers are trying to take advantage of folk's anxiousness to have something/anything and are putting high prices on everything. One local LGS has gotten in quite a bit of .223/5.56, but only puts a few boxes out at a time. This not only limits what folks can buy at one time without the "5 box limit" sign, but also makes folks think they are getting the last of it and better get it while they can.

Scope out some local feed stores. Also independent gas stations that have a "Live Bait" sign taped to the front window. At either you're likely to find a box of 30-30 for $16.99 and a $8.99 box of 20 #4 shot 2-3/4 12 ga. Only buy one box each. Leave the rest for the next guy(s). Enjoy the trip!

Made it back home after logging 3,287 miles. My better half was not as tolerant of checking gun shops for ammo, so I was limited to only about a dozen places.

I ended up buying three boxes of Hornady XTP bullets for my .40 S&W and 10mm firearms.

Although I found lots of ammo, it was all much higher than I was willing to pay.

The last two places today were a Sportsman's Warehouse in Twin Falls, ID and Red's Trading Post in Twin Falls, ID.

The Sportsman's Warehouse was totally wiped out of all ammo, powder, primer and bullets. And their handgun selection was the worst I'd ever seen.

Red's Trading Post had some ammo, but I wasn't about to pay $49.99 for a box of 50 PMC Bronze .40 S&W plinking ammo. IMG_20210315_111712540.jpg

They also had 4 varieties of powder; H110 and 4350 at a bargain price of $69.00 per pound, and Varget at $79.00 per pound. Not sure what the price was on the CFE BLK. Passed on all of it.

Oh! But they had primers! In a locked glass display case, with large pistol primers priced at $170 per 1000...

I did find a box of Hornady 180 grain FMJ FP .401 bullets for $25 that I grabbed, but passed on the rest.

The employees were pleasant and helpful and didn't have an attitude about anything; the prices were just too high for me.

And for a bit of trivia, apparently Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue bought his first guitar there in 1974...

At least they HAVE some stuff for those who truly need it; if you're desperate for a gun, some ammo or reloading stuff you can get it - that is not the case where I live - guns are around, but ammo and reloading components are unobtainable in stores.

I have had good luck with this plan, traveling for work does have a few benefits.

I have a friend that does outside sales in rural Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. This guy knows every gun store and hole in the wall shop on the planet it seems. He tells me about some stuff he finds that would probably never see the light of day otherwise.
