So...Which of these two carbines is better for the money? I've seen some seemingly well-built Imbel FAL carbines for sale for $650 while the DSA STG-58 carbines go for around $1000. I know that both are built from used/surplus kits so the DSA is not a brand new U.S. made barrel, etc. What does the DSA give you that a well-built Imbel does not for $350 more, just a U.S. built receiver? I guess it is just the assurance that your rifle will run out of the box and comes with a warranty? It seems to me that a well-built Imbel carbine kit should be just as good as a DSA, am I mistaken?

Assuming you get a well-built Imbel parts gun that runs fine and is nicely finsihed, nothing. You're money ahead getting the Imbel. If you have a line on a good plumber who will stand by his work, and can beat DSA's prices, go for it.
Of course, the DSA will be more likely to run right out-of-box than your average parts gun, more likely to have better fit and finish, and if it doesn't run you have DSA's lifetime warranty.
If you have a line on a good guy, go for it. If not, I'd go DSA.

BTW, you should be able to get into a DSA STG-58 for well under $1,000, unless the prices have gone up. Dealer cost was floating at about $800-ish, so I would not be surprised to find new ones for $900 and under, used for less. Though, others would know more about prices than me.

If it is a spanking new parts kit and the builder is a craftsman, probably not a lot.
That said, I'd bet that my Steyr "parts kit" for my DSA StG58A was either New, Unissued or test-fired only. It was absolutely pristine (well, it was about 2000 rounds ago) and the DSA receiver was beautifully made.

DSA STGs are very nice and might just get another one to replace the one I sold.
With a DSA you are guranteed the required US parts count required by law as well as a warranty on the rifle. The finish and quality of the one I had was excellent and even though it was a cabine model, it ran 100 percent right out of the box.
With the DSA you will also have a guranteed good resale value. If you monitor the for sale boards you will see that folks selling DSAs have no problem, while others selling "home built" or rifles built from lesser known folks have a harder time selling.
Is it worth the extra? ..To me, yes.

STG58s sell well under $1,000.00, that is unless you want to get price-gouged.
