I was leery about making a gun show puchase but decided to buy what was advertised as a new DSA STG-58 FAL at what seemed like a reasonable price. I just noticed that the take down lever was under the upper rather than behind. Also the rear sights seem different than what appears on the STG58 at DSAs website. I stumbled across a warning on their site about aluminum uppers blowing up. I put a magnet to the lower and noticed that it did not stick. On the upper receiver the magnet sticks to everything including the hand guard. The rifle came with a warranty card from DSA and an FN-FAL manual. I'm concerned because of the differences in the lower. Did I get an STG-58 from DSA or did I get burned? Do I need to be concerned with this lower?

You may not have gotten an STG but an SA58, which is better. The lowers on the SA58's are Al (standard) and it looks like you have the Hampton lower which a nice upgrade. What are the handgaurds made of? What muzzle device is on it? It looks like you got a type 1 receiver as well.

You can always call DSA and see if they can tell you if the receiver was sold as a complete rifle or stripped.

What did you pay for it (if you dont mind sharing)?

Paid 1100. Hampton lower looks like its made of alloy which would explain why not magnetic. real scientific, huh? :) I not too familiar with FALs but it seemed like a reasonable price from what I've seen else where. Handguards are metal. It also has bipod and steyr short flash hider as well as carry handle.

$1100 for an STG is a decent deal and great deal for an SA58. You did well. Enjoy your new rifle.

What barrel length is it?

Looks like the take down lever is a surplus part -- which shouldn't be on a new SA58 (at least mine has the vertical), but may have found its way onto the assembly line somehow.

Aluminum lower is no big deal. An aluminum upper is the potential grenade parked next to your head while shooting.

Price is good, I'd say, for any sort of DSA, particularly with the improved irons on it.

barrel length is 21".
It only came with one mag but I managed to find some CETME metric mags for 11$ in not so bad shape. I can't see spending 20$ + on used mags. I thought FAL mags were in the 5$ range in the recent past.

The aluminum lower with STG forend parts would not match any DSA factory config that I am aware of. Very curious.

I really prefer the aluminum lower to the steel milsurp lower due to the weight difference, which is far from trivial, IMO. The lower is not a pressure containing part, so aluminum is fine.

Some FALs ship with rifle rear sight, or a paratrooper sight. You have the latter of the two and IMO, the better of the two. I feel that the paratrooper model is a bit more solid but this may be preference.

No, that's incorrect. The OP has a "Hampton" lower from DSA. Those have an USGI-style A2 sight in place of the standard sliding rear or para sight.

$1100 for that rifle was a steal assuming nothing is wrong with it. All DSA receivers are stamped SA58...but if they are bullt on the new-surplus parts kits, they are StG58As. When new, those by themselves are dealer priced at $1100-1200. Retail will be 10-15% higher. The Hampton lower is an upgrade.

That's because this particular kit has the Hampton lower upgrade.

Good to know. What would you consider to be the best of the 3 mentioned?

[Obligatory joke]

You got ripped off. You should get rid of it. I'll give you $900 for it.

[/Obligatory joke]

Seriously, good deal.

Mike

I would dry fire that a few times to make certain that DSA did not screw up the bolt and firing pin.
There have been recent reports of them using INCH bolts and modified Metric firing pins.
Bad juju.
When dry fired the pin gets stuck way out past the bolt.
It would kind of suck to dry fire it and not notice it, insert a mag and chamber a round.
If you are lucky the muzzle will be pointed down range when it does a 20 round uncontrolled mag dump.

If you are unlucky.....
