i just saw probably the dumbest gun thing on the USA tv show white collar...a sniper about 200 yards from a certain target is painting the target with a visible red laser...some "sniper"

feel free to point and laugh

lol i just had to share

yea it sounds pretty ridiculous to me. I wonder if the producers of the show even think about things like this. He must not be a gun guy.

In reality it can also work as a psychological tool. Letting a person know that he is being watched.

Dookie, I'm having a hard time believing that. I don't know of any sniper/countersniper doctrine in either military or police use that recommends giving away one's position to try to psyche out the target. Military snipers obviously are not going to give away their positions for anything, or let the enemy know they are in their sights. And generally police snipers are there for over watch, observation, and taking the shot if negotiation fails. It's not the sniper's job in a police situation to be trying to psych out a suspect either.

And at any range a sniper would be useful for, the laser would not be visible except through a scope...which is far more precise than the laser itself. That makes a red laser on a sniper rifle essentially pointless. I don't know of any sniper school that teaches to look through the scope only to see a red laser, and to use the laser as the aiming point, not the scope.

In most realistic situations where such a thing might be employed, I think it's safe to say that any potential target already knows they're "being watched".

Also, what's to stop the potential target from seeing the dot, then opening fire in the direction of the laser while moving to cover? At that point, not only is the target unreachable, but the sniper is also outed.

But yeah - it's TV.

Why so serious?
You wanted a reason a laser might be used, I gave you one. I never said it was a good one. It's a TV show, not life.

I watch the TV for escapism. If I want chewing the fat and BSing, I hang out with my friends, if I want realism, well, I don't go to TV or let my friends drink. :)

I can't think of one time a sniper would use a red laser - It not a part of tactical training or doctrine - it does give a position away - so do shiny rifles and watches for that matter -

Lasers are a huge psycological tool however - due mostly to TV most people are scared to death of lasers - I can say this from personal experience - I have used lasers in armed situations and people do respond to them - its not a tool you would turn on and run around with if you are trying to be sneaky -but when it is used in dynamic situations or places where people are expecting trouble, it is highly effective - for some reason people freak out if they have a dot on them - It also works very well with the Laser dot on my Taser - people are scared enough of a taser, let alone throw a laser on the end of it - usually thats all I need to do to get someones attention - drop the laser on their chest and they tend to go hands up!

So dont disount the psycological aspect of a laser - It does work - not only for your accuracy but also to scare the crap out of your opponant.

I love it on TV when someone shoots out the tire of a speeding car from 75 yards away. Or the best is when someone draws a GLOCK and you hear a hammer cock as they do.

Don't you just love it when there's an big explosion, with all sorts of debris flying around the good guys, and not a piece hits them?

Just to name a few that I have seen recently . . .

Cocking the hammer 3 or 4 times

When someone shoots a semi auto pistol and instead of the slide locking on the last shot, they pull the trigger and hear a "click"

ALWAYS naming a gun wrong

In Commando with the Govenator, in the end he is shooting a belt fed MG. The gun fires on and on, but the belt never moves

Calling full metal jackets hollow points (Lethal Weapon) and calling hollowpoints "armor piercing (also Lethal Weapon)

The list goes on and on

Nick +1, i think think everyone cocking their glocks on tv is a hoot. Especially those that sound like a colt saa. wow! he just thumbed back that glock and it had 4 clicks lol.
The only thing that every bothers me is the misinformation written in by obvious anti's. Otherwise just the silly sounds and all I find entertaining. I hope the bad guys take their training from tv cause then we'll know theirs will always be empty, since on tv they rack them everytime they get a chance. especially the shotguns every cut scene they pump it again lol.

My favorite is John Wayne's SAA Colt 37-shooter. He never had to reload and an Indian bit the dust every time he pulled the trigger. While firing over his shoulder. While riding a horse. From a range of 100 yrds.:what: They just don't make 'em like they used to.

My new favorite was this week's Psych, the coroner examined a body with a bullet wound and declared it was from a Winchester 70. But hey, it's a comedy, right?
RT

It Cracks me up when the "CSI's" assume the bullet hole on a car door is from a 9mm luger without finding the bullet.
What if a .380 was used? or a .38 SPL? or 9x21? or 9x18? or a .357 SIG? etc etc
hehehehh

What's your point?

Actually, I could see the first shot as a gauge shot, then over compensate.

Just for sake of argument.
