Duplicating Winchester Supreme?

Did a brief search, and haven't even looked at Winchester's site yet so if this has been covered, let me know and I'll keep looking.

Anyways, took my Bushy Varminter to the range this weekend with various ammo types to try out. It absolutley loved the 50 grain Winchester Supreme ammo. I am gearing up to handload for the rifle, and currently have a pound of Hodgdon Varget and some Sierra 55 gr Matchking bullets.

Does anyone know what power Winchester uses in the supreme loads? I assume it's a Winchester powder.
Also, bullet? The box says Nosler, but I don't recall seeing any bad ??? looking black silvertipped noslers last time I was looking for bullets...they don't have to be black, but anyone know which particular bullet that is?

Also, since I'm on this mindset: I know there are posts already, but anyone have any pet 50 or 55 grain loads for 24" 1 in 9 AR's?

I think powder has little to do with accuracy and more to do with how it gets your bullet to the right speed. Try calling Winchester and asking them what bullet they used.

The black coating is Lubalox, developed by Winchester. The bullets are marketed undedr the name Combined Technologies, and are produced by Nosler. I have seen them pretty much anywhere Nosler are sold. Hope this helps.

I saw those Combined Tech bullets, and was wondering if they were the same. Well, now I know what bullet to get, and everything I've researched on Varget indicates it will be a good powder to use.

Steve was hinting at this, but a real good place to start is to match the speed of the round that worked so well. Having the same speed will allow you to have similar barrel dynamics to those that worked well.

Typing this, it occurred to me that this is another good reason to have a Chrony!

The above posts are correct on the Win C-T 50gr bullets.
From my experience with .223, Either 26.0gr of H335, or 27.5gr of BL-c2/Win748 will come mighty close to duplication of the 50gr factory load. My experience with Varget in .223 is that it is a little on "slow" side for bullets lighter than 63gr. I can not get the max recommended Hodgdon powder charge of Varget for a 55gr bullet in a .223 case and nowhere near published velocities. For equal charge weights with 55gr bullets, I get better performance from H4895 (extruded powder of choice for 55gr bullets- I use 26.0gr and Federal case/Fed#205primer @ 2.226"oal) I find Varget best with 69-80gr bullets. Next powder purchase I recommend 26.9gr of BL-C2/Win748 with 55gr Sierra BTSP for 3,275fps from 24" bbl.

FWIW, most of the factory loads for .223 are with "spherical" powders, so I would start there in my search.
Ken Waters favors the H335 for use in .223, my loads are some recommended by Bruce Hodgdon (BL-C2).
However, don't discount IMR-4198 or H4198 as my "Bushy" H-Bar much prefered any bullet weight 40-55gr with this powder.
