I havent posted a lot here and mostly just come back when i have questions but here it goes. im going to eventually get an ar but ive wanted to get a bolt gun in 223 for longer range shooting(300-500 yrds). i know what i will get if i ever do go the bolt route but lately ive been shooting my shotgun with a red-dot on it and im really starting to get into the close up quick shooting too. im looking at a flat top ar thats light so i can carry it around and work well on run'n'gun shoots. my question is, is there a good way that i could switch between a red-dot and a scope and still hold a pretty good zero on them both? i know there are mounts that u can lock on and unlock to take them off but how would that work if i wanted to swtich between 2 optics?(scope and red-dot) just wanted some info on the subject, thanks for your time guys.

sounds like you will need a throw lever mount (like Larue Tactical) or sim. for each of your optics. Then you can swap them out or put them both on like some folks do.

LaRue Tactical. They make scope and reddot mounts that will return to zero (within 1 MOA).

LaRue makes great mounts...but I would probably go with a micro red-dot attached to the top of the optic.

:)

like a red dot on top of the scope?
That's it...the image below is a cheap version of one (that I wouldn't recommend, but have never used), but I hear that the Burris Fastfire is a pretty decent model. It should also be noted that these can be canted at an angle (to the side or between turrets) to lower the sight for a better cheek weld.

If you're willing to spend $$, Trijicon makes 4X ACOG scopes that have Doctor Optic or Trijicon red dot sights attached.

Another option is to get a flip-out magnifier and mount it behind an Aimpoint or other red dot, so you can keep your same cheek weld with magnification and without.

Do NOT use a magnifier with an Eotech however. They just don't work well at all. The problem in this case is the fact the Eotech holographic reticule is not reflected straight backwards out of the optic, but actually at a downward angle, so without a fully adjustable mount for the magnifier, it's next to impossible to center the reticule. And the fully adjustable mount is just too complex to be entirely reliable.

Old school Weaver

I have no problems with Weaver rings. They worked thirty years ago. They still work.
I almost want to hide this information because of my future funds.

RX-178, are you talking about combining EOTech sights with non-EOTech magnifiers, or combining EOTech sights with EOTech magnifiers?

The old three-power 3XFTS magnifier had windage and elevation adjustment screws on the base, and the body of the magnifier was concentrically mounted in the rings. Turning the magnifier in the rings would move the center up and down, as would turning the adjustment screws.

The EOTech 516 and 517 sights sit 7 millimeters higher for use with AR15/M16/M4 style rifles. The old 3XFTS magnifier didn't center properly with those two sights.

The new G23FTS magnifier has internal adjustments to center it up and down. It also has a 7 mm shim that attaches between the base and the magnifier to align it with the 516 and 517 sights.

There's a thread (or was earlier) in GD going over the owner of ARMS donating to the Mass I want to say Attorney General, a something Coakley, who is extremely anti-gun. That and apparently they have made more money suing competitors for using the term "throw lever" than they have form selling a decent product. And from what I read in some of the links in that thread, and from people posting in the thread, their product doesn't really compete with their competitors.

They are not like Ronnie Barrett, in that they seem to be totally willing to throw us under the bus if it helps them land a contract here and there.

That is enough to sell me...a LaRue Tactical mount that is. :D

Good 'ole Ronnie seems like a likable character doesn't he...well unless you are a Kommifornia politician. :p

Ironically, Mr. LaRue is the one that dug the information up and posted it on Arfcom.

He's also the victim of one of the lawsuits, so I understand.

Yeah Larue is one of the competitors being sued, and one of the companies that makes a much more user-appreciated product than ARMS.

Ordinarily I don't get into manufacturer-hate (see Kahr-Justin Moon bashing) but this guy is just too much of a bad thing for the shooting community to stay out of it.

First of I suggest this product for you.
Ouch, $600! :what: I am sure it is good, as it says LaRue and Aimpoint...but that is a chunk of change for a back-up/close quarters sighting system.
Secondly [that thread] you all referenced just got REAL interesting. I suggest checking it out.
Can you toss me a link?...I would love to check it out myself.

:)
