End of the World....Beretta 92FS or GLOCK 17?

i've got a 92, and for the end of the world, i'd take a glock. i like the 92 as a firearm, it's pretty, and when maintained is reliable (so far), but the glocks are just too easy to care for.

I don't see how the maintenance of either pistol is radically different, they're both easy to care for.

I would take either one, preference goes to the 92FS though. The stronger primer hits of hammer fired over striker fired for me, and also open slide design. Both of these features are just better for the crappier type of ammo you might encounter in a SHTF situation. I'm assuming you're talking about a "The Road" type scenario.

Beretta,...because of the possible availability of magazines,.....US Military doesn't generally carry Glocks,..but they do issue Beretta's....possible horse trading, scrounging,.and maybe combat pick ups,....

Neither...

I'd take a rifle or a shotgun.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd take the G17. Reliability is a toss up, but the G17 is more durable, easy to work on, and has a boat load of after market parts.

I like the Beretta 92 FS a lot, but in an end of the world scenario, I'd prefer the Glock. Military might use M9s, but most police departments use glocks, but maybe not in 9mm.

That too! Forgot about that, it's another reason to keep at least one 92FS/M9 around. I have heard that the air force has issued Glock 19's to pilots in the past. I don't know if they still do, but I've seen them with M9's.

i would go with the beretta. the point about the military is an interesting one. they do issue LEO's glocks so that may assist in the hunt for magazines, parts, etc. if you chose a glock.

Glock.

I think the polymer would be more durable over a longer period of time.

The mags are polymer coated steel, so they would also probably outlast the Beretta's metal mags.

That said, I think either would be a good thing to have around at the end of the world - provided you were still alive to use either one.

i hadn't thought about the mil surplus angle. that's a very good point. any armory would have replacement parts/pistols/ammo. and in an end of the world situation, no one would be guarding.

The problem with these SHTF scenarios is that no one thinks past the first year or two to where you can't find any more ammo at all easily.

In a true "end of the world" I'd be walking out the door with my Berreta, a bunch of 9mm and at least two of my cap and ball black powder wheelguns, a round ball mold a couple of pounds of BP along with a recipe for making more from surface based materials and a few thousand percussion caps. And likely my .30-30 lever and flintlock rifles over my shoulders.

It's a dead certain cinch that either the Beretta or the GLock or any number of other semi autos would easily last long enough with care to the point where no more ammo could be found for them.

Long after no one can find ammo anymore I'd still be able to find lead in various forms and cast my own round balls. And even when the percussion caps run out or go bad there's still the flintlock.

Did I mention the bowie knife and tomahawk?

If you think about how many 92s that the military has and the number of glocks in the hands of LEO and civis does this make sense? Who is the first responder? how many glock mags did you see at the last gun show and how many mags that fit the 92? I know you want to think that the military will save you but when S really HTF they will lock the gates and hunker down. The only way to get pick-ups will be to stroll in the middle of a battle field. Do they still shoot scavengers on sight?

I thought we didn't do end of the world...

Anyways, in the event that it's the end of the world/civilization, and I had to make a choice, I'd throw the 92 in my backpack and put the glock 17 in a belt holster. Choice done.

92FS - I already have 5 variants, with plans for another. I have done work to the triggers of all except 1. I have extra parts for the guns as well. I prefer the feel of the Beretta in my hand over a Glock.

Beretta 92FS For Sure

1) Its PROVEN! and I question gossip of the reliability issues!
(There were only 14 slide failures, Only 4 under 10,000 rounds)
Out of 321,260 weapons... THATS .0045%
(Frame issues were corrected and refitted in factory -24,000 units)

2) And there would be plenty of parts, magazines, ammo etc.
I.E. US Military side arm!

If The US Military Side Arm were still the 1911.... I would have not chosen either of your options because of #2...

Beretta is Very Reliable and Durable...It stands with the 1911 in proving itself!

The reliability issues were related to the magazines and the finish that was on the mags! would not let ammo roll as it went up magazine and when interjection of sand/dirt with the rough finish and it created real problems.

NEVER had such issues with my smooth factory magazines. Eats Anything!

Yea that sounds like a low rate till you compare it to the 0% slide failure rate of Glock.
