Nice collection of 97s .

When I started the thread it was mostly hypothetical, but still valid. Dont think I dont value anyones opinion. I certainly was not trying to convert any one. My point mostly was why have to learn a new shotgun while your learning a new sport. It represents a sizeable investment.

In reading your suggestions I thought of an actual human we could plug in to the hypo.

Took him with me 1 saturday, he loved it, devoured everything in print went out dropped something like $1400 on a gas auto. Premium I would say. I can not remember the model
but it had a flat nickel plated receiver with a blue doo dad stuck to the side. Kinda think it was a beretta, seems like it used mobilchokes. And an adjustible comb. Anyway he was really pumped up, went and had a pro fit it to him alone and I'm sure it was done correctly. After a solid 2 months of not connecting he was just as far down and dejected. This guy is an awesome shot. So over next 2 or 3 months he runs his stock all over the map. It got where I couldnt get him to come shoot! The gun he has had since
he was 15 was Wingmaster 12 30" FULL. He grew up shooting in western Kansas < prarie chickens/pheasants. Any way we got him to come out leave flossy at home. Bring old REMMY. He shoots a 72 with fixed full choke and the Jinx was broken. Point of intrest we had 1 stand with small black clay about 60mph from tower behind you. WE called it "sonic Oreo" I dont know the correct name. He smoked all 4, with full choke. so takes two weeks to talk him into it But I got him to set his shim set to match the 870. He connects regular as hell with the auto now. I think he's on his way to AA rating. Moral He grew up in Kansas not Spain or Italy. He has shot a dead straight gun his whole life. He is equally as good with either now. And if he hits a slump out comes Remmy.
Do I think there is any thing ideal about a 30"full pump for SC, No
Now would I as a result of this one instance, recommend An 870 30" full as Remington can make them gun. No In fact I would say it would fit less than 15% of the shots.....Unless your him. Only advantage is He's comfortable with it, and He knows exactly what his pattern is at any given range.

Sounds like a Teknys. Waste of money IMO. The basic 391s do everything you could possibly need. Beretta makes some good guns, but they also like to pile on cheeseball features and run the price up. They think too highly of themselves, and it shows in their pricing and attitude.

I think the 391 is a better gun than the 1187 not because it shoots better. They both shoot just fine. The 391 is just a better designed and better executed gun.

I think your right Tecknys I can never remember that. I think its probably a waste as well, His adjusta comb deal is screwed down tight. so I guess a regular stock would have worked. Only 1187s I've had was a Supermag, that I played with trying to get it to feed 1oz loads, sold to a buddy. 1 1187 sportsman 20 Ga.
that I liked for SC and 5 Stand. I also shoot autos.

I've educated a few Steely Eyed Target Sharks to the effectiveness of a 30" barreled 870 at clays, but with a LM choke mostly.

The problem with adjustable butts, combs, ribs etc, is the tremendous temptation to fiddle with them when one's in a slump. Get the thing adjusted at the patterning board and let it be.

A 391,with or without blue inlays, is a very good choice for a sporter. As long as it fits....

DAVE I'm looking at a 2009 Remington catalog, it says 870 Classic Trap,
comes with RemChoke. Is it doable with a trap stock, or would I want a skeet stock. It's got possibilities, 30" bbl with IC. I may have to try that.

Hhmm, I've done well with a 1978 870 TB trap gun with a new Light Contour barrel and Remchokes. Same with Number Six, same barrel. The TB had a trap stock, and a Monte Carlo comb. 6 wears its original field stock, ca 1955. The TB also had an adjustable butt pad, which was as far down as it could get and twisted a good bit to fit my shoulder pocket better. I may have shot that one better, but both were good.

For you, try them both if possible. Instead of that new Classic Trap, look around for an older letter grade trap gun and swap barrels. Friend Anapex picked up a gorgeous TC, one grade up from the TB for a song a couple years back. It had one of the overbored target barrels and shot very well. IIRC, it was $250.

Or, find a decent WM, and tweak fit at the patterning board. Acquire a 30" LC barrel and have fun.

When I shoot a pump at SC, I use LM more than anything else, but IC will work for maybe 80% of the shot opps and be close to ideal for more than 50%.

Using a pump will probably not get your name in the NSCA Hall Of Fame, but it will teach you how to shoot better and how to run a pump.

And that last is a Life Skill everyone needs to know.....

I am not conscious of working the action, If you stop me after a shot and ask me if I did, I would have to check. for me the cycle ends with shell in chamber.

Best way I can describe it, stand next to your idea of an accomplished pump man.
watch the clay hes shooting, at the shot as fast as you can turn your head.
if he's already rechambered, and you didn't catch him he is a pump man.

if your standing in the right place the empty will hit you in the ear, before you can react to the shot.

Sounds like crap, but try it. Just my opinion.

Dave had an 11-58 Trap, with the gas dial on the front, favorite dove gun. Very tight full. I know the trap stock is specialized for rising shots, what I was wondering was if there were enough rising shots in SC to make that an advantage? I'm thinking a skeet stock. like the TC idea.

Lotsa trap shooters like up to all the pattern over the bead. Most SC types like something more like 60% of the pattern above the bead, including me.

SC has droppers, bloopers, gnarly battues that turn full face just as they drop like rocks and so on. I can shoot trap better with a SC gun than SC with a trap gun.

Agreed on chambering. The shuck completes the shot....
